Is Mexico safe?

Someone asked if it is safe to fly into Mexico and travel around. She wanted links. Here is my response:

Statistically speaking, the most dangerous part of your trip will be from your home in the USA to the airport. Unfortunately, with the increased violence in USA, you should be very careful.
Once you get to Mexico, you can begin to enjoy your vacation. As with any trip, even to the mall at home, don't get too drunk, be careful with your stuff and stay away from the drug cartel. And that means casual participation. Just say NO, and I'm not joking.
Don't expect links about this, because the US media is having a field day with the horrors in Mexico. It sells newspapers, while totally over-looking the real horrors of violence in the USA.
Do you think the US media would say "Go to Mexico," and take your vacation or retirement money with you? OR, "Go South," to forget US sales, gasoline and other taxes? "Leave America!" and stop reading their newspaper, stop watching their TV, stop going to their malls and stop responding to their ads? Do you think the USA media would say that today's (Monday, 1/23/2012) murder/suicide in Troy, Michigan is so horrible, you should stop traveling in America? I don't think so.
Listen to folks who travel, rent or have homes in Mexico. I travel alone and because of my business, I drive back and forth to the USA, every other month.
I see both sides of the border and know from experience, for innocent gringas like you and me, Mexico is one of the safest places in the world.

To see some facts, check out this map to see what areas and municipalities have historically low (or high) rates of violence - especially those that have lower rates of violence and homicides than Canada: http://stanford.edu/~dkronick/mexico_crime/ : Murder Numbers and Murder Rates for Mexican Municipalities

You can click on either "Rates" or "Absolute" buttons to get the map to display rates or total numbers by municipality. If you take your cursor and hover over a municipality, it shows last year's annual data. If you click on a municipality, it displays a bar graph of the last 20 years of monthly data.

If safety really is the concern, pertinent facts may be helpful to allay the results of CBC's and US Media's ongoing lurid and distorted reporting. Yes, some parts of Mexico have serious serious serious problems with violence - but these areas do not represent all of Mexico. Finally, both official and unofficial reports of violence and murders show that drug-free tourists and expats have not really been targeted by the cartels.

e.g. Yucatan State has very low rates of murder and violence - 10X to 20X lower than Canadian or US States => safer.

Did someone on this forum ask that question or was that just a pretext to start a thread publicizing your point of view? When you made the identical post on the Thorn Tree Mexican branch it was in response to a specific question about safety in Veracruz.
