Insurance on Rental Car

Can't Post |
Hello!
I will be flying into Cancun and renting a car to drive to Valladolid, Merida, and beyond. I found a great rental rate, but since my personal auto coverage doesn't cover rentals in Mexico, I was wondering if I had to take any of the rental's insurance. I am using a major credit card to pay for the rental. If I have to take the rental's insurance, this nearly doubles the cost and I may have to seek other alternatives.
Thanks!
Judson

Driving in Mexico without insurance is one of the crazist things you can do. Your US insurance, in cluding your credit card coverage, is not valid in Mexico.

Have though about public transportation? There is not other alternative, but the pay the exorbitant insurance rate being charged by the car rental companies.
Follow Rolly's advise and get insurance if you plan to rent a car there. It will be crazy to drive w/o insurance in MX.

Who'd you get quote from

I called Avis International or Mexico, I forget, and got very bad generic information from the Avis help line. Very high prices as well.
I finally settled on AAA to get the car because they had good info and better prices. You think insurance is bad in Mexico, insure the car for a Mexican driver (another $12-15 a day).
It's expensive no matter!

Insurance: What I take, what I decline

Any time I've rented a car in Mexico, third party liability was included in the rate that was quoted.
Vehicle collision damage was extra. Typically however, this is not "insurance" it is a collistion damage waiver (CDW) that is provided by the rental company. I enquired of my credit card service (MasterCard Gold, Bank of Montreal) if I would be covered for collision damage in Mexico. They confirmed that my MC-Gold covered me for collision damage for vehicle rentals in Mexico.
American guests who stayed at our rental home were advised by Visa Gold that the CDW would be covered by Visa. The rental company in Mexico (Budget) told them that they had to purchase the CDW from the rental company and Visa would reimburse them.
This was incorrect. The guests have been trying since January 2001 to get reimbursed.
