If you're planning to take your vehicle into Mexico permanently

Mexico has implemented a change in the process of bringing your vehicle into Mexico permanently. They now require a vehicle emissions test. Really.

From the article:
Now, anyone taking a vehicle into Mexico permanently - not just for a there-and-back trip - must first show that the vehicle has passed an emissions test in any of the four U.S. border states in the previous six months.
What does "permanently" mean? To be nationalized? Does this affect FMM or FM2/3 people entering the country?

The people mentioned in the story are heading south for the holidays and returning, so the vehicles are not entering the country permanently. I wonder how this is going to impact Canadians coming down for the winter. Another "shoot themselves in the foot" episode I think.

If you read the story a bit more closely, most every example given involved the vehicle being left in Mexico. Are you looking for special rules for Canadians or did you simply fail to include people from the US in this same problem?

No special reason for not mentioning US folks, who may well cope with finding the nearest emissions control statoin - simnply wondering about Canadians - is that a problem for you? Im also wondering how this affects those of us whose cars leave Mexico once in awhile and then return and those few people who are in the process of nationalizing their vehicles - will they have to take them back to the US to get an emissions control certificate or will a local one do? I see lots of unanswered questions. Only time will tell how it will all play out.

chinagringo: Of course Canadians should have special privileges!! I really dont think this article has anyhting to do with vehicles that are here on a TIP. Makes sense that if you are IMPORTING PERMANENTLY that type of rule might apply. Why don they go after the hundreds of thousands of vehicles in Mexico that couldnt pass even a basic safety never mind a pollution check? The Paisanos get scr--ed as much as the tourists. Maybe more!

Any of us who have traveled Mexico by car/pickup/van knows that the rules may be applied differently at each and every border crossing. Since the article specified that this hadn't been a well publicized new rule or reg, all of us may be guessing as to its application. As the saying goes: YMMV!
