IAVE

I was looking at the website for IAVE, for cuotas. From what I can tell, you don't get any discount by buying one of these. The advantage is convenience. Can anyone tell me if my interpretation is correct?

I was confused by the prices for the devices that will charge the toll to your credit card. They seem to be pretty spendy - more than 500 pesos for some of them. What do you get for that - just the device?

I'm used to the toll cards in the U.S. that you buy in advance and you get a discount on the tolls, plus the convenience of going through the toll booth quickly. This doesn't appear to be that kind of system. Again, I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who could set me straight on this.

Thanks,
Jane

IAVE is designed for regular commercial users and comes from the days when all tolls had to be paid in cash - among other things, it was a way to ensure that truck drivers did not have to carry any cash with them, and also did away with the need to retain (for accounting or reimbursement) all those pesky little paper toll receipts.

Actually, residents who live between Playas de Tijuana and Baja Malibu are given a 20% discount on the IAVE fees when they subscribe to the service. This was negotiated with representatives of the respective campos when the Cuota road 1D was constructed and they were left without a Libre alternative.

Tony

That comes as a surprise to me and is contrary to my experience in Baja where the toll road has been there for about thirty years. It seems to me that the toll roads have been primarily patronized by travelers in private autos leaving the free roads to the truck traffic. In fact one of the main advantages of the cuota was that drivers didn't get stuck behind a lot of slow moving trucks. I suppose things might be different in the interior of the Republic as your message would imply.
