How much to believe?

Can't Post | Private Reply
We are about to cross over the border at Del Rio in the morning and are heading to Bernal in Queretaro state. We are driving and this will be our third time taking the same route(MX57 most of the way)through Monclova, Saltillo, Matehuala, San Luis Potosi and Queretaro. We have never had a problem but are starting to hear about some really bad incidents. We have been told not to take the bypass around Monclova because of shakedowns, that we should go through town even though it will take much longer because it is safer. We have been told not to drive at all, that we are crazy to even consider it. We have been told that people who have been driving to Mexico for years won't drive there anymore because of recent problems. So are we nuts to do this or are things being blown out of proportion as the seem to be a lot of times when something goes wrong SOB. I know we should use our heads and not do stupid things but is that enough?? Any words of wisdom about these problems and about the route we are taking?
Thanks for any help.

Hi Rolly,
That's kind of what I thought. Thanks for getting back to me, you're the best!! I will post a message when we get to Bernal and let everyone know how the trip went.

We made it from Eagle Pass to San Miguel without incident, but
I confess to being nervous about it (first trip). This was in a
BRIGHT yellow 2008 Jeep Rubicon with TWO car top carrier
bags stuffed full.

We DID avoid the bypass because we have heard so many incidents about it.
We went straight through town, which really was not a problem. I also did
the drive in one day, which was rather intense!

We plan to try Columbia Bridge next time though.

Have a safe trip,
Tina

We have certainly missed your crossing this morning, but since we live in Cd. Acuna we hope you had a warm, safe welcome at this side of the border. Not that many turistas choose this route. I think it is a pretty good one anyway. We love it here. YOu probably passed just a couple of miles from our ranch. Feliz Navidad!

Well, we made it in one piece and Rolly was right. Buy earplugs and don't listen!! We had absolutely no problems, everyone was gracious and friendly as always.

I can't begin to tell everyone how much we recommend the Del Rio or Eagle Pass crossing. If you are anywhere near there I don't know why you would try any other crossing. Both crossings end up at the same Migracion office. Del Rio takes a small highway then meets MX57 at Allende. Eagle Pass is MX 57 all the way. After you pass Allende you continue on MX57 till you get to the Migracion office(takes about 1 to 1 1/2 hours to get to the office from the border) where you get everything done in one small building. You get your tourist visa, car papers, all the copies you need, pay for everything and get your car sticker. You get in the car drive through the red light, green light and you are on your way. There has never been a line on the road or in the office and it has never taken us more than 1/2 an hour to complete everything and be on our way. We have always driven through fully loaded, gone through the nothing to declare line, gotten a green light and kept going. They have never even given us a second glance. Happy trails!!
