Highway between Laredo and Monterrey remains closed

Can't Post | Private Reply
10 July: Authorities estimate that the closure could last up to four days due to the venting of water from the dam Venustiano Carranza in Coahuila, which flooded the town of Anahuac, Nuevo León.

Reported here.

Rolly, Is this update from El Siglo de Torreon? Just curious in case I need an update and don't hear from your posts on this very topic in time to make a decision of when to leave Fl.

Thanks for keeping up these posts!

Hi Sally,

The latest news about the highway came from Sanborns Insurance office in Laredo.

I think that Rolly and others will concur with me on this one: finding road info or info on "narco incidents" or for that matter info in general is an endless chore in MX. It seems to me that there is rarely a dominant single news source in a given region to get all the news. From my experience, one picks up fragments here and there and then hopefully pieces them together into a semi accurate picture.

Speaking of Sanborns, they allowed us to cancel our car insurance today. Probably any insurance co. would do the same. We were to start using it today as we expected to be driving in Mexico by today. I only bought 2 weeks for the travel dates. They refunded me that and said I can re-purchase for the new dates when ready.
Just thought I'd share that in case any were wondering if their Mexican insurance could be canceled and refunded.

Here's why the highway is still closed. From the Nuevo Laredo newspaper El Mañana

We probably (realistically) aren't driving across until next week now.
Found this article on same issue which states that the alternate route is backed up now too.

If I were planning to drive Laredo to Monterrey, I'd wait several days after the highway reopens to give the several hundred stranded trucks and cars time to clear out. It's going to be a traffic nightmare for several days.

That's the best case scenario. Let's hope the floods haven't caused major damage to the road itself.

Happy to hear you have changed your plans again See Saw. Makes better sense to me. Thanks for the tip on the insurance. Maybe I will try that also. I might just try to have mine extended for a month. I bought mine for a year maybe they will and maybe they won't, but all they can say is no.

Rolly has hit the nail on the head. We are all so accustomed to seeing flooding from the television that we forget that is only the beginning. As Rolly has put it, it is the dams still wide open that are causing other problems downstream, roads that are still covered by water, or have been, not only this one highway in the photo. There is the still unseen undermining that such floods bring to roadway surfaces, until a vehicle goes through the pavement or the base of a concrete bridge support spanning gullies are made unstable and court collapse, of otherwise sound appearing bridges. There is so much more to really be aware about after the rains and most flooding has come and gone. Just be safe, be aware and be cautious. Also be aware of where you buy gasoline and used cars for the next several months. Try not to buy gasoline in low lying areas. I can assure you, these underground tanks have some water in them. That makes for unnecessary and expensive automobile engine repairs. Most of us like to buy fresh food and produce at our local vendors. Be very careful about buying meat, make sure it is local and came from high ground. Dead animals are not uncommonly found to be butchered and sold after death by drowning. Look carefully at your produce you buy. Be very aware of any mold at all on the veggies. One has to understand that these Mexican farmers lives and crops have been destroyed and they are only trying to save what they think they can market and bring some money into their family. They are not intentionally trying to make people sick, but it does happen. Remember for the most part these are not sophisticated or well educated farmers raising and selling their crops at our local weekend shops. Separate the leaves of produce and if you see even a single spot of mold pass it by. Wash your produce more than you have before. Heck, I will eat almost anything, but agriculture diseases can be very debilitating. Just this past week there has been an outbreak of food poisoning in the USA from fresh made salsas that have been left on the tables overnight. The CDC has posted warnings about eating fresh made salsa and Guacamole as being a major source of food poisoning. http://www.aolhealth.com/...e-of-food-poisoning/ It has been found that simple refrigeration could have prevented many related illnesses. So be aware. I do not know if it is available in Mexico or not but Dengue Fever is alive and well in much of Mexico. If inoculations are available, then get them. My wife thinks they are not available in Mexico, I am thinking otherwise. Dengue Fever is a very nasty malady to get. robt65.

As a resident of Nuevo Laredo I think that is a good prediction about what is going to happen and sound advice.
It looks like the back road to Monterry--Highway 1 through Anahuac and Lampazos may open today.

Just a couple of words about Robt65's excellent post: remember that food-borne illnesses become much more common during Mexico's rainy season. Right now, giardia is all but epidemic here in Morelia. I know at least eight people who currently are undergoing treatment for it, myself and my partner included. The disease is dreadful and the treatment is almost as bad, but we are slowly getting better.

As far as I know, there is no inoculation against dengue, which is common in Mexico. The best precaution is to make certain that there are no mosquito breeding places (standing water) on or in your property. You can't avoid mosquitoes entirely, but you can minimize their numbers at your home.

With respect to Rolly's recommendation on waiting for the backlog to clear out - reports that I have read today indicate that there are 20,000 vehicles in the logjam. With that numerber, it may take quite some time!

As a result of political pressure, the Carratera Nacional is being reopened today to commercial truck traffic. This move was apparently precipitated by the food shortages occurring in Nuevo Laredo stores because of the highway closures.

I hear you on that. We have no plans to leave this week. Maybe not next week either. :(
So I guess the 2nd flood didn't happen as predicted? I read another flooding in the area was expected this week.

The Río Bravo/Grande did rise again following the second storm, but not to anywhere near the same levels it had reached previously (fortunately); the river level is now on its way down again.
