Guadalajara area shopping

Can't Post | Private Reply
I asked this question on the chapala.com forum and haven't gotten any real helpful responses, so thought I'd try it here:

I live near Puerto Vallarta and am hoping one of you living closer to Guadalajara can help me.
Here, you always hear "you can buy (insert item you are seeking) for waaay less in Guadalajara."
People say there are different areas of town for instance if you are seeking auto parts, or floor tile, or furniture, or shoes.
My question is - Is there any type of written guide to Guadalajara shopping? Either on-line or a book one could buy.
I know that the tianguis in Tonala is a great source for "decor" and accessories.
Any specific recommendations for furniture - a nicely made rustico type?
Also, what area would one buy ceramic tile? Talevera pottery?
I am asking on behalf of a friend who will probably want to take the bus up to GDL, and spend a maximum of 2 nights there. We might possibly decide to drive to GDL so we can haul more stuff back.
Just looking around, asking people locally for recommendations might be fun if we were closer to GDL and had more time but I am trying to cut down on her "searching time."
Thanks for your help.

Thank you very much for the information which arrived in my in-box yesterday afternoon, and I read today. I appreciate you taking the time to answer. The friend who wanted the info has come on her 2-week vacation and gone home, and didn't get to Guadalajara this time.
I'll save the info for next time.

Why send a private reply when there are others who may wish that same info? Isn't that the rationale for a forum?

YES YOU ARE SO CORRECT, THE DAY I replied to this question Mex Connect was not allowing me to log in for some sort of odd reason, here is what I told this person That no there are no actual written guides and yes there are people which you pay a considerable amount for a tour. I also added that Tonola has wonderful places to but Talavera tiles and yes it is much cheaper than in Puerto Vallarta, also Tonola is a big place and that on Tiangis ( market days) Thursday and Sunday of each week is not always the best days to manuever there and there is also very nice furniture available there as well but you need to venture about more than just the two main avenues and that this is why if you can go with a person who is familiar you will see so much more. Also for other types of tiles, bathroom fixtures, etc... Avenida Ninos Heroes is the place in Guadalajara it runs for many kilometers and is chock full of these shops, albeit more modern than rustico there are a few places which sell this type also. I also mentioned a B&B where friends stayed and the owner arranged to accompany the guests and not for the fees paid to the guides. If you are interested its called www.casavenezuela.com.mx and they are giving 50% off rates just mention you saw it here.

For the kind of items you are looking for go to Tonala and Tlaquepaque.

Do not go Thursdays and Sundays to the tianguis which are full of crap which you can find in various stores in Tonala without having to fight the crowds.

I think I have been to the tianguis 5 times in 10 years and I now refuse to go as I see absolutely nothing there that I cannot find in Tonala on regular days.If you like huge crowds it si your type of place but I rather shop in peace without being shoved and pushed. It is more difficult during market day to see and find the good stores as well.
Tonala has great things and tacky things it is up to you to walk the streets and enter the tallers and shops and see what you like. It can be a little overwhelming to shop there as they are so many places so allocate more time there than in Tlaquepaque.
First go to Tlaquepaque to see the good stuff and then go to Tonala to see who makes similar items at a lesser price.

Stay at the Tonala hotel and walk walk and walk.

Thanks for putting that up. I understand that there is a street of music shops selling instruments and accessories in GDL, possibily "Lopez Portrillo" or something along those lines. Would you happen to know where that might be?

Ninos Heros for tile and plumbing is fantastic. We saved big bucks there on a lot of tile, an outdoor cooker and a very nice one piece commode. Really easy to get to although parking is very tough.

Hello great you saved bucks, its true parking is awful in Guadalajara, the street is Lopez Cotilla in the historic centro for musical instruments also a few more along the streets 16 de Septiembre and Corona, luckily in this area there are parking garages so its easier just wander these center streets and you will find the stores. Good luck shopping.
