Gas Stations and Credit Cards

Is PEMEX accepting credit cards, if so is there a way to know which ones and what kind of signs to look for. I rather pay for gas using plastic than money.

I buy gas with plastic without giving it a thought in the USA, but not here in Mexico. Credit card scams are alive and well in Mexico. After my card got nailed for US$7,000+, I became very selective about where I use it. And a Pemex station is not on my approved list.
Use cash and sleep better.

The Pemex stations I have seen accepting credit
cards accepted only VISA/MasterCard - no others.
At each of these there was a substantial surcharge
for using a credit card, about 10 per cent, on an
already high gasoline price. The only obvious
robbery was out in the open.
I also took along gas cans - when re-filling them
I found that some stations do not give full
measure - you get fewer liters than you are
paying for.
Use cash, pesos, and read the discussion boards
for the area you're going to for lists of the
"rook" stations.
Elliott Moore

Would you care to elaborate on the $7k so that we can avoid those type of scams?

My encounter with card fraud

Can't Post |
Before I moved to Lerdo, Durango, I came down here for a visit. I went shopping at several stores across the river in Torreón – all large businesses – Sears, etc. When I got back home in Los Angeles, a call came from the credit card company saying there had been unusual activity on my card. I told the lady that I had just returned from a trip to Mexico. That seemed to satisfy her. The next day, she called again and said there was some more activity on my card and asked if I had my card in my possession. She said there was over $7,000 in charges. WOW! She faxed a copy of the charges for my review. The bandito had bought an expensive stereo system, a lot of clothes, and had Pemex charges all over northern Mexico.
The card company covered the charges, but it made me sit up and take notice. Now I am very wary. When I use my card, I never let it out of my sight. Of course, that will not eliminate all forms of fraud, but it will cut down on the chances -- I hope.

I am thinking of taking extra gas cans as well. Are you allowed to mount them on the exterior of your car of do you have to carry them inside the car. I have an SUV, so I don't have a trunk, but it would be easy to mount a can on the back or the roof. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Pemex stations with the GasoPlus logo accept American Express only. There is a surcharge.
: Is PEMEX accepting credit cards, if so is there a way to know which ones and what kind of signs to look for. I rather pay for gas using plastic than money.

Used my card ONCE at a hotel in PV a couple of
years back. The sweet young lady at the desk
did a "double swipe" on the card and duplicates
of my card appeared as far away as New York!
Keep your card in your pocket. Maybe use it for
paying a medical emergency at a hospital, but
cash for everthing else.

I think that it is not safe to take gas like that. My suggestion is never allow your car be less than 1/2 full. Fill up often and be mindful about the distance between gas stations, if there is such a thing, in Mexican roads.

Good, I'll be looking for those as I am planning to pay for gas with my AMEX. I am not worried about fraudulent charges as my liability is extremely limited. It may be a headache, but at least I don't have to carry large amounts of cash.
I will like to ask if $N10,000 pesos enough for the tolls and gas?
: Pemex stations with the GasoPlus logo accept American Express only. Gas Cans

Can't Post |
All our gas cans were outside the vehicle, mostly
up on the roof rack. Carrying them inside the
vehicle is more dangerous, I think, especially
in summer when gas vaporizes even more easily.
We had no problems with authorities over carrying
gas cans out in plain open view.
Elliott Moore
