GPS/Mexico Maps

We are planning to purchase a GPS and are interested in the experiences (and recommendations) of others regarding what is best among the many brands and models available, with particular emphasis on use in Mexico. Many, we know, are unsuitable because they do not include MX maps.

Thanks.

We have a Magellan Maestro 4550 which includes maps of all of North America, Puerto Rico and Mexico.

Thanks to Rolly and Neil for all the input. I made a similar request on another MX forum and got a large number of responses. Hands down the best choice of all is Garmin, with the most detailed maps of Mexico. The consensus is don't even bother looking at the others. And, definitely don't consider the higher priced MX maps available for download. The gist of one comment was, they cost twice as much (as Garmin) and the maps are half as good.

Again, thanks. I've ordered a Garmin from Amazon.

Hola, I use the Garmin 855 loaded with the bicimapas from Mexico and am completely satisfied, I wish there was a site where you could compare the two side by side like there was a couple years ago, at that time the bicimapas was superior to garmin in content and coverage, garmin came out with a newer version this year that may be better than bici and I would still like to see a side by side...by the way I used it to drive the whole country ( even dirt roads) and only had one glitch near Tulum ( it did not show fastest route)...The best test was when arriving into a large city after dark on a busy Friday night and it guiding me directly to the hotel...suerte y paz

Thanks for that. I, too, gather that the more recent Garmin versions are a great improvement on the earlier ones. This is a heck of a time we're living in with the tremendous almost overnight advances in user friendly technology. Hope to be starting to check out our new unit in a few days.

I use a Garmin with the third-party bicimapas maps, and have been very pleased. Since I've owned the bicimapas product, they have updated it three times, two for free. It seems to be a fine company. But despite their regular updates, don't expect the level of precision or accuracy you are used to in the USA. That said, however, my wife and I have found it invaluable when driving in Mexico. It is especially useful when in a large city like Guadalajara where street signs are often missing. One problem in cities is that the bicimapas product doesn't have information about one-way streets, but you get used to working around that.

I don't think you can go wrong with this combination.
