FMM ??'s

Now that all of you have had a chance to read the new rules and procedures, I have some confusion over the new FMM and therefore a question or more. According to all of the reports I have read, a FMM will have a max stay limit of 180 days during a one year period. My questions:
1) Is the initial FMM issued for automatically for 180 days period or can one request a 30 day period for example?
2) Suppose one is issued a 180 day FMM and then leaves MX, reporting such exit - can the clock be re-started upon re-entry?
3) Or does one simply cancel their FMM upon exit and then obtain a new one for each visit - assuming that their computers will track the number of days in MX?

Obviously, these questions arise when one wants to facilitate two or more trips in and out of MX spread over a one year period. I cannot imagine that a country with a good part of their economy based upon tourism, would not have such a scenario figured out but I have not seen any real definition to this issue.

Contrary to what I and others initially reported, the FMM is not automatically good for 180 days, so yes, you can ask for 30 days.

3) Or does one simply cancel their FMM upon exit and then obtain a new one for each visit - assuming that their computers will track the number of days in MX?

Yes, cancel on exit and get a new one on return.

I have read posts quoting various INM officials saying one can be in México for only 180 days per year. I have read other posts quoting INM officials saying that is not true. I have been unable to find that restriction listed on any INM webpage. My best guess is that, for a tourist, the FMM is just an FMT in a new dress.

Now for the computer thing. Can you imagine the long lines at the border or airports if every tourist has to have their name checked in the computer to see if they are eligible for an FMM? Where would the rejected ones be held at the airport until they could be deported? The whole idea just seems too crazy to be true.
