If the highway is in good shape but it wasn't a few weeks ago and is questionable in the rainy season

April is about as dry as you can get, so I guess it wasn't a good test of the route.

I'm not at all trying to pick a fight here, but....... EASY???

Alternative yes, but IMHO it is not easy. I actually like that route but some folks might look at the route, see that is is 'easy' and go that way for no other reason than to get there another way quicker. That may be a bad decision.

I've been that way a couple of times in the past few years. As Sparks mentions, it should be taken 'in the rainy season' only after checking about any mud slides closing the road. Some folks even think that it is 'dangerous' to go over 'those mountain roads between Mascota and PV". I'm not one that thinks that, but that part of it is more than hilly.

But to me what does NOT make it easy is that it is all 2-lane and sometimes narrow roads and (from Ajijic) goes through a bunch of towns (slow), through agricultural lands (lots of trucks in season) and in general is just a bit tedious overall after 5 hours. To top that off, as one is approaching Ixtapa nearing PV, that road has to win the prize for the most unmarked topes outside of a town in all of Mexico! I hit one, in the shadows out in the middle of nowhere, at 55mph and was airborne!

So for easy, I'll take the cuota; for scenery (and especially if one wants to see the sugarcane fields, visit Talpa de Allende, Mascota and my favorite San Sebastian de Oeste) try that route. But if I'm just wanting to go to the PV area, un-uh, not again.

Just my opinion.

They keep working on that slide section near San Sebastian every year so it's getting better and overall not worse than highway 80 to Melaque.

The "cuota" route from Compostela to Vallarta has got to be one of the most dangerous sections of road -traffic wise- I've run into

Hola Scott, I believe there are two bridges out on Highway 70 around Ixtapa at this time, they were knocked out the same day that the Ameca River bridge collapsed on Highway 200, Rick from Rincon
