Driving with FM-3s

Can't Post |
My friend and I will be driving from California to PV about September 1st. We will both have valid FM-3s and CA driver's licenses. However, the pink slip for the vehicle we will be registering as we cross into Mexico only has my name on it as the legal owner. Three questions: 1. Who can legally drive the car in Mexico? 2. If we are stopped for any reason will there be a problem if he is driving, as long as I am in the car and all of our papers are in order? 3. Once we reach PV will he be able to drive the car without me in it? Is there some sort of authorization I can sign? We will be able to show proof of joint ownership of our residence, if that helps. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, in advance.

:1. Who can legally drive the car in Mexico? <p>Any licensed person may drive the car if you are present. Any licensed person who has the same visa status as you (FM3) may drive the car without your presence.<p>:2. (What a pain.)

Just to add a little extra to what Rolly suggested, take all your temporary import papers and photo copy them. Use those to drive around PV, then you don't have to worry. If you leave on a trip out of town, you'll have to have the originals. Have a copy of both fm-3's in the car so that if the police should want to know, they could see that you live at the same place. Most of the time, the city police or transitos won't want anything but a drivers license. I drove my car without any registration nor a valid drivers license for almost two years with no hassles and I got a few tickets to boot. I would have never left the city limits in that condition with fear of having the car impounded. It helps to speak Spanish too. That way you can explain your situation. You don't have to be fluent, just know enough to blame what ever goes wrong on something beyond your control :-).

After many many inter-actions with Mexican Transitos I can assure you that a Fancy Folio of Xeroxs of ALL your paperwork and photos of those 'Dear Twins' of your sister in law AND some LUNCH MONEY ready in the hand will be all you need, Oh yeah, practice your Spanish, the "Lunch Fee" will be less!<p>Good Luck!
Pernel.<p>P.S. Best line I know with the police.... "I'm here to HELP Mexico!"<p>

Do the same standards apply if you are travelling on a FMT?<p>
