The San Blas bypass is an option but might depend on time of day and where you want to stay. I have a favorite motel in Tepic. Going San Blas allows you to see the ocean much sooner ... which you've seen almost none of previously.

When I went that route the roads were not well maintained with pot holes and brush over growth down to one lane and towns with topes. It is pretty and little traffic

Thanks Sparks - that actually sounds quite pleasant. We will be in no hurry and that sounds a lot like the drive to Xcalak.
Actually, the drive to where we stayed in Xcalak was about seven miles out the "coast Hiway" - a non-maintained track through the jungle on coral sand and shells. Quite overgrown much of the way.
Thanks Again!

We had decided to drive the entire way down to La Cruz. We took the advice found here and from others and crossed at the Mariposa crossing in Nogales. The crossing was far easier than I ever expected it to be. A nod of the ehad and a wave of the hand and we were through - no problem. At immigration, I filled out the necessary paperwork and about 1/2 hour later ( remembering that we have seven people) we were on our way. Again, no problem! We were soon
We noticed fewer and fewer Pemex stations the further south that we went until we found a nearly 200km stretch without any at all north of Mazatlan. No problem there, just be sure to plan for it. We took the Las Varras / San Blas route and stayed in San Blas for two nights. We stayed at the Hotel Bucanero which was very reasonable and comfortable with it's own pool. It even has wifi.
We left San Blas for an enjoyable short drive to La Cruz de Huanacaxtle. Very nice scenery around there.
We arrived at La Cruz and checked into our condo at La Joya which is way fancier than we are used to. It was very nice, but apparently the construction standards there are a bit lacking. As we were in our room, we suddenly heard loud popping and cracking sounds from all sides of the apartment including the room above us. My oldest daughter noticed the couch jump up during this noise. When it all stopped, we investigated to see what had happened and found the floor tiles all had buckled and raised up off the floor as though under great compression from all sides. We called the rpoperty mamager to let her know what had occurred and they immediately rented us a room in town. They were at first going to move us to one of their other developments in the area. We requested Hotel Piedra Blanca and so that is where we are now. A very nice place with Wifi in the room as mentioned whereas La Joya does not have wifi in the room after all.
I must say that perhaps our timing could have been better for a visit. I noticed extremely heavy military presence and many, many police from various departments. Well, we drove down to the marina to meet our friends and still extremely heavy military presence. Hmmm, what is going on here I wonder. It was not long before the reason was clear as the President of Mexico, Felipe Calderon came in with five helicopters to the marina for the MexOrc cup race. Interestingly, we were allowed to continue to walk the area even when he came back into the marina on a private yacht ( and heavy armor front and rear), he even waved and gave the thumbs up to a friends little girl who waved to him from their boat 50' away. We would likely have been able to shake his hand had we stayed up in the area that he debarked the yacht, but we did not as we dislike large crowds.
Afterwards, we had gone back to our hotel room and went to sleep only to be woke up around midnight by the sound of what appeared to be heavy and medium artillery fire about 1/2 mile south of us. I got up to investigate to realize that it was only fireworks for the Mexorc celebration! Funny what ones mind will do when awoke from a sound sleep :) Even the boats in the marina did not expect the fireworks and had thought the same as I did when they started!

Thanks for the trip report. Glad the drive down went well. We left La Cruz as El Presidente was arriving, so never got a chance to see him. We did have fun watching the preparations and feeling the excitement in the air in the days leading up to his visit. I don't know if you've been to La Cruz before, but they did an amazing job of getting it "spiffed up". I hope you're enjoying it! If you get a chance, stop by and say hello to Dennis and Doreen.
