I think that the bus would be smarter and much cheaper. Don't even think about traveling at night, especially in the area of Mexico City or from Mexico City to Acapulco, which have security problems. Driving in Mexico City is tough, I only do it every 10 years or so, it takes that long to forget how bad it was last time. The toll (cuota) roads are faster and safer.
Richard

: Hi
: I am thinking of hiring a car with my boyfriendin Veracruz City and and taking in the sites and driving to Acapulco.

It is not a bad drive if you take the toll roads. Figure on 8 hours or so, and the road is in excellent condition. If you would like a bargain for a rental car, please try Dollar Rent a Car in Veracruz. Either go to our booth at the airport, or to our main office on Av. Simon Bolivar #501. We will give you the best rate in town.
Take care,
Dollar

Thank you for the feedback.
I understand the not driving at night situation and have absolutley no plans on driving in Mexico city.
We where planning on taking the tolled roads and stopping off at points of interest along the way and spending about 4 days in Acapulco
