We are coming from the LA area - which is the better route to PV - Nogales or Calexico on hwy 2? We have lots of time - but want the easiest route. Should we purchase MX auto insurance before we leave home or at the border? Thanks.

Drive to Nogales on the US side. It's freeway all the way and gas is cheaper. Get your insurance in Nogales, AZ or Tucson. Buy the insurance for at least 6 months or a year. It's MUCH cheaper that way. Get the "rider" for the attorney help.
Check this website for insurance. I've used the guy for several years. He has offices in Tucson and in Nogales:

Allow me to elaborate a little on Esteban's correct answer:
There are numerous towns along Mex 2 such as San Luis Rio Colorado and Carborca that will slow down your rate of progress between Mexicali and Sta Ana. There is also an Aduana reten and I did not see a Hacienda Office used to bond automobiles at the rurally located checkpoint.
I was told yesterday that regular gasoline in Arizona cost ninety-nine cents a gallon.
As far as road surface conditions are concerned, Mex 2 remains as an archtypical 2-lane Mexican highway with occasional potholes and light to moderate truck traffic. The Sonoran desert scenery is nice, maybe a 5 on a 10 scale for aesthetics.

Driving from Ca to Yucatan/Quintana Roo, is it advisable to drive across TX to McAlly then down the golf via Monterrey? Also is Aduana still legalizing trucks or is this program over?
