Can't Post |

Driving Route Santa Teresa To Guadalajara

Can't Post |
Santa Teresa is a good entry point, uncrowded, fast, during the regular day - closed in the wee
hours; then there is a fast track nearly straight
to Chihuahua, bypassing Juarez. You will still
pass the real inspection station southbound.
If you just want to get there fast, and have no
preferred stops along the way, I would take the
tollway (45) where it exists, swapping to 49
near Jimenez.
In the Torreon city complex, I would continue on
49 - but not go on to Durango with it. Instead
go south on old 49 to Fresnillo, then south on
the road to Jerez and beyond (NOT old 54 out of
Zacatecas, a narrow mountain road, lots of
trucks, 10 mph if you're lucky).
At Guadalajara I would take the bypass around
the city proper and take the road to Chapala,
then at the lake make a sharp right for the last
few miles into Ajijic.
It has been a couple of years since I made this trip;
completion of some new toll roads, not finished
when I was there, might alter some of these
choices. Consult a really good road atlas, then
take it with you. Guia Roji is pretty good for
the main roads; AAA also makes a passable map.
Best of luck. Hope you enjoy your trip.
Elliott Moore

: Jeff
I find the best way to get to Guadalajara is go to Gomez Palacio, then towards Durango about 70 miles turning off at Cuencame to Zacatecas then to Aguascalientes and on to Guadalajara. A few more tolls this way but faster.

Do not take Santa Theresa POE without permit

Can't Post |
I just got back from Guadalajara on Wed. night. On my way to GDL I took the Santa Theresa POE around 8am, which is the time they open (it closes at 10pm daily), and they are no longer doing temporary vehicle import permitting. They sent me to the Kilometro 30 garita just north of Cuidad Jaurez. It took 3.5 hours just to get my permit. Im sure you have heard the horror stories with that secondary inspection station.
Having said that, the POE is very good, there is only one federal guard early in the morning. You will not get hassled. There is a secondary inspection prior to entering the toll road to Salamayuka which bypasses both Juarez and the Kilometro Trienta. You end up very close to Villa Ahumada were the toll road to Chihuahua (city) begins.
If you already have your permit and dont have to much crap you will not get hassled. If you do not have your permit you will be diverted through an ugly part of Juarez to the Kilometro 30 garita.
