Driving Nogales to Ixtapa

Can't Post |
I have never driven in Mexico, we have always flown into the country. Next year after we retire we would like to drive a VW "thing" which has been refurbished down in lieu of flying. We would cross at Nogales, AZ. Can anyone be kind enough to share their knowledge and experience with me? What are the best routes to take for fastest and easiest traveling. What are the conditions of these roads. What are some decent (clean with not many frills)places of lodging to stay alond the way. We would like to drive for only 5-6 hours per day. Will the VW be agequate to this task? Any pearls of wisdom you might offer will be greatly appreciated.

I've driven to Zihuatanejo a couple of times from Vancouver, Canada, crossing at Nogales. I have trip logs from two trips, one via Guadalajara, Tepic and La Mira; one via Guadalajara, Morelia, La Mira.
