Douglas Ariz to Hermosilla

Hi all, My wife and I are leaving Colo on Tues for a 2 month camper tour of Mexico. Our first few weeks will be spent going from Guaymas to Mazatlan. From Douglas / Agua Prieta to Hermosilla we are looking at 17 etc. south to Hermosilla. Is this a nice route, any suggestions on places to see. Then from Guaymas down we will camp with our van, camper, dog and BMW motorcycle. We prefer semi remote camping, preferably on the beach. Any suggestions? John

we traveled that route from Colorado Springs early February. The road out of Agua Prieta towards Cananea was in extremely bad shape, lots of potholes and washouts. We were pulling a small trailer and my husband swore we would never drive that route again. Can't help with camping suggestions, as we stay in hotels when we travel.

We live in Melaque, a 3 1/2 hour hour drive south of Puerto Vallarta. If you come down this way, there are 3 campgrounds right on the beach and also one in Barra de Navidad at the Cadillac Ranch. The campground in Barra has a pool, free WiFi, DishNet TV, library/book exchange and the best bar in town http://hectors-qclub.com/index.html.

The Rio Sonora route from Cananea south through Arizpe and Aconchi is considered more scenic than Hwy 17. Can't speak to road conditions, but here's a link to a map (and a website):

Rio Sonora Map & Driving Directions

Note that this area is east of Hwy 15 and therefore outside of the "free zone" in Sonora. So you'll need to get an "All-of-Mexico" vehicle Temporary Importation Permit (TIP), either at the Banjercito office at the border at Agua Prieta or in the town of Cananea, or in advance by on-line application and return mail to your Stateside address. Since you plan to head south beyond Empalme (near Guaymas), which is the end of the "free zone", you'll eventually need one of these TIPs anyway.

This vehicle permit is in addition to your FM-T (tourist card) for yourselves personally which you get from Mexican Immigration at the border.

i like the melaque idea...

you could check www.ontheroadin.com for campgrounds in mexico.... there is an rv camp around playa brujas in mazatlan... on the same street next to the beach where the RIU mazatlan is located at.... if you are driving to mazatlan or through mazatlan, on the toll road you will see the green sign that says "playas mazatlan" the road only goes to the beach... take that exit... you can also simply stop to have lunch at playa brujas...

The best route from Douglas to Herm. is to take the toll road ( Highway 15). Not as scenic but not "hairy". Presently the other roads in that area have had incidents of Narcos setting up road blocks and stealing cars. We live in Sonora in the winter and I would not take any back roads in that area! I know that some will think the following is extreme but today I would not travel past Guaymas. Too many incidents on highway 15 including one that involved 3 RV's. Until this year highway 15 was a safe as I-10 NOB. Not anymore.
