When driving north on this highway, we were told by restaurant owners from Puerto Escondido not to travel at night, since we would probably be robbed 5 minutes out of town. This was after a PEMEX attendent told us it was totally safe.
The next day we encountered a federal police truck that ran out of gas. I offered a jerry can full free. The commandante made each of his six men dig in to their pockets to repay us for the gas, despite my offer. While filling up, I noticed two large holes through the front windshield. I was told that a policeman was shot to death on the highway a few months before.
ABout twenty km south of Acapulco, a window in our vehicle was shot out by a small bore gun as we passed a market place around 9PM.
Travel only in the day.
