Damages on the autopista

We must give a HUGE thanks to Vichil and her husband - uobba/Houndog/Bob for having posted sometime in the past about what to do if you suffer damages on the toll roads in Mexico!!! It seems that they had mentioned saving the receipts from the toll booths, which we have faithfully done since reading about it.
On Jul 31, 2011, on a return to Comala from Ajijic, just past the last bridge south bound where they are widening it, we were passed by a doble-remolqe going north, which threw up a good sized rock, breaking our windshield! It sounded like a gunshot and left a 3in impact that looked like a bullet hole. Anyway, at the last toll booth going into the state of Colima, we stopped and reported it to the people on duty there. They directed us to the parking area and sent out a young man from Cruz Roja to take a report of our well being. Then a supervisor came out and told us to wait and they would have an adjustor/investigator there with 45 min. He did show up in the 45 min and I think part of his motivation was that is was getting quite dark and stormy looking. He took the report and informed me that any damages had to be near a constructon
area and since there was the bridge being built, the company that maintains the freeways would cover 100% of the repairs.
YEAAAA!! He gave us a copy of the report, stating that on the front and told us to go to a certain repair shop on Mon to start the process of getting the windshield replaced.
Dutifully as advised, on Mon. we did go to the glass shop and they ordered the replacement from the Peugeot factory in Toluca-we drive a Grand Raid and love it! After 3 wks. of not being able to get the glass and many conversations, I broke down and enlisted the help of a better Spanish speaking friend who can be a barracuda when dealing with recalcitrant people, by now the insurance company - mine and the freeways', which happened to be the same - Inbursa..was arguing over who was going to do the work. Finally they capitulated and agreed that I could take it to the dealer since they were the only ones that seemed to be able to get the part.....at a mere $8,000 mx!!!! WHAAAAT?! Seems the model of vehicle that we purchased has some fancy bells & whistles.....the windshield has sensors in it that control the speed of the wipers based on the amount of water hitting it and another sensor that turns on the headlights when the light diminishes sufficiently to trigger them.....both of these features are actually great to have. We had no idea when we purchased this used car locally that it had these features.
Anyway, in the end, the insurance company did reimburse us 100% for the entire cost of replacement....
The moral of the story- keep your receipts
report immediately at the closest toll booth any problems
be persistant in getting it fixed
keep copies of all related paperwork..I had to provide copies of several documents more than once!
We hope this will help anyone else that runs into problems along the freeways here...perserverance pays!!!

Thanks for the reminder. Just yesterday we took what sounded like a small rock to the windshield while driving on the autopista between Tepic and Guadalajara, and I told my partner, "Look for any damage! Look for any damage! If it's broken CAPUFE is paying!".

But we didn't see a crack. Plus I couldn't remember exactly what the procedure was. Now I do. Thanks again.

Some cuotas are specific that damage to glass is not included - I think the ones in Sinaloa say that. Perhaps it is a cuota by cuota situation?

Wow, that surprises me! Isn't CAPUFE bid on and didn't one of Carlos Slim's companies win that bid? I would have thought it would be nationwide. Hmmmm - I will try to find out - unless someone already knows for sure.

I believe that you are correct since the various cuotas are owned by a number of different companies? My guess would be that each sets their own set of rules?

Here's what I found on the CAPUFE website:

http://www.capufe.gob.mx/...ce05a034bd7316d8a0c/

I don't see any exceptions for any states.

That may be Rocky, but last month we did the Lake Chapala area to Tucson and back and certain cuotas were specific in their notices at toll booths that damages to glass were not covered. My memory tells me cuotas in Sinaloa but my memory can be faulty at times. However, as we picked up a windshield chip along the way, I was most annoyed to see the notices. CG is quite correct in that cuotas are owned by a number of different companies, including some international owners. Capufe appears not, in fact, to have control over all cuotas. I note that the Sinaloa cuotas and Colima to Manzanillo cuota do not appear on the maps on the Capufe site. There may be others also, that I am not familiar with.
