Current Info on San Sebastian del Oeste

Has anybody been to San Sebastian del Oeste recently? We are trying to plan this year's trip and are thinking about exploring this area. Most of the info that turned up in my search was a few years old, but did make the place sound interesting. So, how is the road, the town, etc.?

Everything I hear about the road in is ... it depends on the weather. With the last week of heavy rain Highway 70 might even be a problem. A month from now probably all's well.

Better to have a car with clearance

I was there about 2 weeks ago and there were no road problems, but that was before the rains...I did notice a couple road gang camps with heavy machinery, so if a few bolders fall they are cleaned up fast....at the turn off to San Seb check out the antique still on the left side of the road, he sells some very good Tequila...also the coffee plantition as you enter town is fun to expore and taste their wares...bring your camera...Rick

And don't miss an incredible Italian dinner at Real y Minas, just off the square. Walter and Coco serve up the most delicious pastas and pizzas, and a stellar tiramisu. Their lasagna is like eating a cloud....the little museum next to the church has some interesting objects, and the best entertainment of all is a nice long stroll around town.

This is absolute truth. I've spent time in Italy and I've lived in New York City but I don't know that I've ever had better Italian Food than this. "Like eating a cloud" is a perfect description. I think it was seven layers of paper thin lasagna noodles. Unbelievable. Three of us ordered three different dishes (a Ravioli being one, can't remember the other) and all of them made our eyes melt. I still think about that meal. Also, if I recall I think she/they were preparing to open a artist's cooperative/bar/nightclubby/whatever thing in an ancient mud-stucco building filled with history, a turret, and bullets. They were nice enough to give us a tour. If they've gotten that off the ground, probably worth a look.

San Sebastian del Oeste is sweet and very picturesque. And VERY quiet. I've had to wait a couple of times, going in either direction, for the road crews to clear some slides, but never had to wait longer than half hour to 45 minutes. You might want to also consider driving on further if you get your fill of SSdO. The stretch of road into Mascota is very picturesque, and beyond that, the DROP down into Talpa de Allende is spectacular. (The order of these assume you're driving initially from the Puerto Vallarta area.)

I think that Sparks comment of "it depends on the weather" is the key. I too came through there about 3 weeks ago.... between the two rainy periods.... and the road was OK from Ameca to PV. But if you are coming during the rainy season (summer) all bets might be off. I had no problem even in a car with very little clearance.

I did find the road, in general, in worse shape than it was 4 years ago when I last went through. And it is, for about 50 miles, one big curve after another! And there are about 745 topes between "PV" and San Sebastian. But if you have never been to San Sebastian, go! You will be in for a treat, both visually and gastronomically.
