Cheap Thrills - Jalisco/Nayarit

I realize that if you know the answer to this question you might not be willing to post it here, but...I'm traveling on a tight budget in Feb., landing in P.V. Can someone recommend a nice, quite village where there are inexpensive places to stay that is not overrun with tourists (I know, I'M a tourist), but where there are some minimal accommodations, hotel, restaurants, etc. I'd be happy camping if it came to that. Thanks,

North of PV, try La Penita and San Blas on the coast. Inland, Mascota, Compestella, Magdelena, South - El Tuito --- just look at a map. All of these can be reached on the bus.

Check out Chacala especially families involved in the Techos de Mexico guest housing program.

Also Andee's long-running blog about her life in Chacala.

However sadly, Andee died in January. However her son may keep her blogs on-line as a tribute to his mother.
Many people who had occassion to meet Andee or correspond with her, hold her memory dear.

Que te vaya bien, Andee.

Mascota is certainly a worthwhile place to visit. In the same general vicinity, Talpa and San Sebastian also offer interesting possibilities:

Tony's articles are always 'the best'. And if you are looking for a truly great trip, go inland from PV to these places.

Since the article was written some time ago, a little update is warranted: "The road up from PV to these places has undergone a major upgrade.... there is no longer the need to be concerned about having a 4WD vehicle to get there! It is, of course, a 2-lane road but one can drive it at 60mph with no problem. And there is now even a new bridge over the river so one does not have to (or get to, as it was a thrill) go down the VERY steep road and cross the river - literally, as the picture depicts - and back up the steep road again."

In my opinion, San Sebastian del Oeste, Mascota and Talpa are not to be missed.... and now with the new road it's a piece of cake from PV. Just don't tell anyone!

Hello: Try Mascota. Forget Chacala. I like Chacala very much and spent a Christmas vacation there when the Techos de México project was still new. But-----it is is FULL of Canadians and other tourists during December, January and February. No Vancies except at the Moyaua (luxury at sky-high prices) and the other higher priced hotel. In fact there are no other hotels. And Techos de México is such a bargain that the roofs are rented months in advance. For a short stay of one or two nights, forget it.

Adiós. jerezano.
