Cheap Clean Hotels in Zacatecas

Can't Post | Private Reply
Although we have traveled around Mexico for the past thirty years, and lived here for six, we have never been to Zacatecas. We are planning to make a bus trip there from our home in Acuna, Coahuila, in a couple of weeks. We need a clean, convenient hotel to stay in, probably in the neighborhood of 300 pesos or less per night for my husband and me.

We are interested in the year-round climate and general cost of living. Here in Acuna the 108 degree weather for several weeks each summer is just too much. We need to move some place within relatively easy driving distance of Texas but can't spend a fortune on housing and utilities. This upcoming trip is to explore possibilities for an extended (probably permanent) stay.

I have looked on the Zacatecas forum but did not find much info. Can anyone make specific recommendations, especially about hotels and climate? Grateful for your responses.

Wow! I didn't even realise we had a Zacatecas Forum... but the subject of hotels in Zacatecas has come up before (more than once). If the following link doesn't work, then enter "Zacatecas" and "Hotel" into the "Search Posts" function and you'll find some excellent suggestions.

Carron:

I hear it gets mighty cold in Zacatecas, which is at quite a high altitude, and that the area is subject to often frigid winds. Maybe San Luis Potosi, a very nice city fairly close to the Texas border, would have a more pleasant climate. To each his own, of course.

We reviewed the SLP media while there and think you can find nice, inexpensive housing there.

We recently stopped there on a driving trip and stayed at the Hotel Posada Tolosa which accepted our dog-
a major requirement for lodgings. The rate was $580 pesos per night at that time. It was clean, with an in
hotel restaurant (no wine) with beer & hard stuff and an elevator plus off street parking garage.

We stayed over night in Zacatecas a couple of weeks ago. The big fancy hotel that you see first was full so we hit the next one up the road. It was very interestig almost like a tunnel into the interior. We stopped to register and a 16 flashed but we didn't know where to register... a lady came out and waved us on. Another gal showed us to room 16, closed the curtain behind our car and requested 200 pesos. The room was very nice, clean and nicely decorated. It wasn't till we turned on the TV that we realized that we were in a "hot sheet" motel. There wasn't anywhere within walking distance to eat so we ordered from "room service". Edible and filling is about the best I could say for it, but I guess that most folks don't go there for the food.

Actually other than eating before we checked in, I would stay there again. It was clean, quiet, nice and the car was completely safe. It turned out that they had other channels besides the porno ones. All Spanish of course but we picked one that we'd seen before so we could follow along.

I don't think you'd have any trouble taking your dog there. I think they pretty much turn a blind eye to whatever!

Just a couple of caveats about the Hotel Posada Tolosa.

I stayed there about three weeks ago. This property is built into the side of a hill and its rooms are distributed over three floors above the ground floor. Most of the rooms are interior rooms and have no windows to the outside.

Being a bit claustrophobic, I asked for a room with an outside window and was given one on the third floor. The room itself was fine, with a small balcony and a view over the city toward La Bufa. Unfortunately, the shower drain had no J-trap and the "aroma" emanating from the drain was quite unpleasant. Alas, the staff insisted no other room with outside windows was available. Put towels over the drain and kept the bathroom door closed...

Also, the "quaint" elevator failed while I was there, sending a few dozen gallons of hydraulic fluid flooding down the concrete floor of the third-floor parking garage. Not fun trying to walk on that stuff! Slicker than deer guts on a door knob... Check to make sure the elevator is working before taking a room above the primero piso (2nd floor), 'cause otherwise it means a hard-breathing hike up the stairs (at 8,100 feet).

Your mileage may vary...

We have lived in Mexico long enough to know there are wonderful hotels (auto or regular) for under 300 pesos.

We certainly don't mind an autohotel so long as we can stay more than 8 hours, or overnite. Autohotels in Tuxtla Guiterrez, Chiapas, where we lived for several years, were luxurious, but always limited the hours customers/clients could stay.

Do you remember the name of the hotel you stayed in???? Thanks.

I don't remember the name but the Big hotel is on the left as you come in and the "interesting" motel is just up the road on the right. The stay was limited to 12 hours, way more time then we spend in a hotel when we're traveling.

Hostal Del Río, near the corner of Hidalgo and Júarez, about $25 usd equivalent for a large clean room. Very central location. Parking might be an issue. Also, the better rooms are up two flights of stairs. (puff! puff!)

I've also read good reports of Hostal Villa Colonial, behind the Cathedral. It has private rooms as well as hostel bunk rooms. Also has Internet service.
All generalities are suspect, including this one.

Email for Hostel Villa Colonial

However, if you're feeling flush, there's the Quinta Real, the classy hotel inside the old bull ring.

I heard a report last year from someone who stayed there and found it quite marvellous.

A hotel not to stay in Zacatecas.

Posada de Los Condes. Claims to be 3 star. $300 pesos. Room decor can be described as early prison cell. Narrow passage ways. Desk person was indifferent and would not answer in house telephone or any info.

Too late we saw the sign that said no food or drink in room. Would not permit our ice chest.

Our mistake was to take the room without checking. We did this only because it had been recommended. We goofed.

Unless I win the lottery, we will never be that flush! That's why we go for rooms under 300 pesos, not just under 300 dollars. We are careful, as another poster mentioned in his reply, to actually eyeball the room offered before we accept it and have found most hoteliers to be pretty nice about letting us look until we find something that satisfies us.

All that said, we will certainly splurge on a drink or two in the bull pens.

Thanks to all of you who have answered with suggestions about accommodations in Zacatecas. We are going by bus (don't know the logistics for that as of now) and will spend the last week of August there. I will be sure to post a report on the trip here on Mex Connect.

Now the main thing I have to do before we actually leave is to unpack our winter clothes, which we normally wouldn't need here until maybe next January! Summer lasts forever en la Frontera and when the temperatures finally do plunge, we freeze and have snow or hail.

For New Years this year we were at the Hotel Contessa, across from the Parque Indepencia and next door to the library, views with small balconies in just about every room, old hotel with THE GREATEST coffee bar downstairs, a great little restaurant across the street and only 3 or 4 blocks from the Cathedral and center of town. I think it was $45/night and that was a holiday. Small room but clean and nice. We could park and forget the car and walk everywhere in town.
Best of luck, Nancy Niccoli

I'm not sure what your range for cheap or reasonable is. Here's a post I made last August after geting back from Zacatecas.

We just got back from Zacatecas (and AGS) this evening, which is why I'm just getting around to replying. In Zacatecas we stayed at the "Hostal de la Calle de Abajo", a 3 star hotel (with only 7 rooms), for which we paid 499 for a double with one matrimonial bed. They charged the same 499 for our two kids (okay, one kid and one niece) to stay in another room with two matrimonial beds. I liked ours better as it had a sofa and generally more space. Clean and interesting. We'd go back there again. Less than 10 minutes walk to the cathedral. No a/c but they had fans. Not perfect, but certainly okay for us. Of course, I don't really know how you like your hotels except for the price comment.

We normally target 350-500 pesos. We splurged at the top of our price range because we had stayed in a 2 star in AGS (trying to hold to the budget because we needed two rooms with the kids).

In any case, there's one more data point for you.

Ed & Fran

Hello,

Go to www.hostellingmexico.com or www.hostelworld.com

Two blocks from the Cathedral in downtown Zacatecas is the Hostal Villa Colonial which I can reccomend. I don't know about the others. You can get a private room in Villa Colonial which is just as good or better than in most budget Hotels. Check it out. No room service, of course.

As to Zacatecas itself. It is at a very high altitude. Almost 7000 feet. Local joke is that we have two seasons (stations). Winter and the Railroad station. Shows you how long that joke has been around.

Hills. Zacatecas is like San Francisco except the hills are steeper.

This is no place for people with health problems which can be aggravated by the high altitude and by the constant climbing.

Our central bus station can be particularly cold in the winter with the wind blasting through the building.

I usually reccomend that people bring a light sweater for evening wear even during the hottest days of summer.

Zacatecas is a fascinating city to visit. Colonial architecture, 7 or more museums, concerts, etc. Very active Tourism office located across from the Cathedral. Many people don't realize that at the height of the silver boom Zacatecas was larger and more important to the Spanish Empire than Mexico City itself. The Cathedral itself is probably the most fascinating example of neo baroque architecture called something like Chigauresque in all Mexico. I never can remember that name. So, by all means, come and enjoy.

There is no large gringo colony. The gringos are perhaps 20 or so and are all working people. Very few retirees. No trouble about speaking Spanish. You will find English speakers almost within fingertip reach. Very friendly police. Special tourist police too. Wise not to bring a car. Traffic problems. Forget parking.

From the bus station to the central Independence Square you can catch a local bus every 10 minutes or so. Just ask Centro? and the driver will tell you yes, or to wait for a specific route number. No problems with luggage. Of course Taxi's available and not too expensive, although some out-of-state taxi drivers may take you the long way, so negotiate the fare before you get in. Not prevalent.

Hotel Conde, Hotel Condessa across the street are both on Independence square. I would say both 1 star. I found the Conde to be cleaner than the Condessa but more commercial.

jerezano.

Jerezano is right about Hostal Villa Colonial. Some friends stayed there and had a nice room with kitchenette for, as I recall, less than $200 pesos a day. They did not have a single room for me so I stayed at Posada de la Moneda (where I had been on earlier trips). The hotel is not fancy, but the location is wonderful, about a block from the cathedral. I think I paid about $400 a day for a single. I like it and probably will stay there again. They have a website.
If you choose to stay at Hostal Villa Colonial, you should make a reservation on line. A small deposit is required. It has to be the best deal in townm IF they have the accommodation you need. (I think most of us here are beyond dormitory living).
