Cell Phone Conversion

I've read other posts here about having a U.S. cell phone modified for use in Mexico. People have mentioned Telcel. I will be crossing over to Mexico at Laredo, TX. Is there a place there where I can have my cell phone modified for use throughout Medico? Also, on the return do they change it back for use in the U.S.? Another thing, once the phone is changed for use in Mexico, do you retain the same phone number you had at home?

I think the link will probably give you some info regarding a cellphone in Mexico.
This is the route I'll be taking this coming winter myself.
Buy one on Ebay and bring it with you.
Telcel uses TDMA technology and iusacell and others use CDMA technology. They all use the 800Mhz analog system as well.
Hope this is of some help.
This link shows Cellphone coverage in Mexico:

I am Canadian and have a Rogers AT&T (http://www.shoprogers.com/store/wireless/overview.asp) cell phone with a monthly contract. My phone is as Nokia 3300 series phone.
When we drove to Lake Chapala last winter, (via Laredo) my phone had coverage most of the time (all the times that I looked to check).
As a test, while living in Lake Chapala, I had my daughter dial my number from home (Canada) and it rang in Mexico.
I didn't answer since I didn't know what kind of monetary charges it would trigger, nor did I make any calls from Mexico (no need) - but I feel confident that it would work just like at home in Canada.
Good Luck !
