Car purchase

Can't Post | Private Reply
We'll be relocating to Puerto Vallarta later this year & I was wondering if anyone has posted re. the pros & cons of driving a vehicle down (from Canada) or purchasing in Mexico. Apologies if this subject has been covered before but if it has, could you please direct me to the appropriate discussion. TIA.

CANADIAN PLATES

Pro:
1. After paying the small permit fee at the border, there will never again be any government fees to pay.
2. You can let your Canadian plates and insurance expire, so you don't have those expenses.
3. Mexican auto insurance costs less for your Canadian car than for a comparable Mexican car. (Why is one of life's great mysteries.)

Con:
1. You cannot sell the car in México.
2. There are restrictions on who may drive the car.
3. Some repair parts may not be available and must be ordered from the USA or Canada.
4. With expired Canadian plates, it will be very difficult, probably impossible, to drive the car back to Canada even for a short visit without re-registering and re-insuring in Canada.
5. Many people believe that foreign plates attract the attention of crooked cops looking for a mordita.

MEXICAN PLATES

Pro:
1. No restriction on who may drive the car.
2. Repair parts are probably readily available.
3. You can sell the car in México.
4. If you want to go back for a visit, you can drive the car through the USA to Canada with the Mexican plates and easily available trip insurance.

Con:
1. The car will cost more than the same car in Canada.
2. Insurance will cost more than with foreign plates.
3. There are annual registration fees and taxes. Some of the taxes disappear after the car is 10 years old.
4. While you can drive the car North for a visit, you cannot import it, ie get Canadian plates for the car. If you move back to Canada you will need to sell the car in México.

Rolly,

Thanks for the info, could you elaborate on the driver restrictions with a CDN plated car please. Also, in percentage terms, how much more would you expect the equivalent car to cost if purchased in MX ?

Read here for the law about the car: http://rollybrook.com/article_106.htm It boils down to a Mexican cannot drive your car unless you are in the car. This means your maid, gardener, auto mechanic, etc can never drive the car alone.

I'm not the one to ask about car prices.

As far as the difference in car prices, it ranges from as little as 20% up to almost 100% more, based on the make/model and distance you are from the border. When I was working in Mexico City I knew of several folks who would make the trip up to the border to buy their cars because it was so much cheaper. You need to check on the legalities of this as far as registration, etc.

When my son was having a financial crisis (full time student, full time job, recently divorced with custody of his 2 year old) his gas costs were astronomical. I suggested he buy a SmartCar (here they cost about $11,000 - $14,000 US depending on the model) which would save him over $100/wk on gas (honest). The same car we purchased for $14,000 was selling for $21,000 in Tampa! We loaned him our car until he found a good used Prius. Just drove the little SmartCar back to Mexico and the gas cost from Tampa to Austin for a visit with three of my girls, then down on to Lake Chapala was about $150.00 US. That $7000 dollar difference in cost buys me a lot of insurances and taxes.

It all depends on what vehicle you want to buy.

Georgia,
You drove a SmartCar to Tampa. I thought that was wild.
Your son drove around with a Mexican-plated car there. Then you drove it back?
Wow. Bravo!

No big deal. The car performed flawlessly and the aggressive Texan drivers took pity on me and were nice to me. You can have a Mexican plated car in the US for up to one year. We got US insurance for it. My son and I have the same last name and he had a letter and registration, etc. Occasionally, the police would follow him: he is hispanic, Mexican plated car, etc. etc. I think they were embarrassed to stop him. One policeman did: but wanted to know about the car! All legal. No problem. Fun trip.
