Yes, as long as the "FM3" is current. My import "expired" in March of '08.

And, there has been a lot of discussion about having to notify Aduana within 15 days after getting your new visa, I got my new one Friday and asked my lawyer and she knew nothing of that requirement. She did say to make the visa copy I carry in black and white rather than color to make it obvious it's a copy so it wouldn't look like I was trying to "fake" the real thing.

Poncho, there is a lot you need to know about your car's permit. Read about it here.

Yes, the rules say to notify Aduana in person within 15 days of INM visa changes or renewals: Take your letter requesting the change and your documents into your local Aduana office. Since Aduana data bases are not linked to INM data bases, then you can keep the correct expiration date of your car permit current in Aduana’s computers only by notifying Aduana of your new INM visa expiration date.

Many expats report using a copy of Article 106 and their FM2/FM2 to make roadside arguments with police, but why spend ˝ hour or more trying to prove your case to the police and possibly their jefe(s), when a simple application to Aduana is legal, free, easy, and gets you a paper documenting the correct expiration date, and the update paves the way for you to possibly get your deposit back.

I think that now that there is a required $400 deposit Aduana officials will be more knowledgeable about the required paperwork.

When we first imported (temporarily) our vehicle in 2001, the officals in the Ciudad Juarez Aduana office, where you get your car sticker, had absolutely NO idea what an FM3 was, so we just got a tourist sticker (no linkage at all). When we went to Aduana in Puerto Vallarta to register our car a few years later when we thought we really should, they looked at us as if we came from another planet. Whenever we have been stopped by police in Mexico, they are happy with the fact our FM documents are current and that we have the import sticker on the windshield and the paperwork in the glove box. If we pass Aduana checkpoints where they are waving people in for car checks (which is very rarely), we have only had to wave our booklets (when they still had booklets) and they wave us on. Only recently have we printed out the Article 106 because we think it´s a good idea in priniciple.

I´m not saying people shouldn´t let Aduana know about their immigration status changes--especially those who have paid the newly required $400 (or whatever people pay for their particular car year). But, as for us, who haven´t left a deposit, I think we´ll wait until we get our new immigration status before we go back to Aduana to try to register our soon-to-disapper FM2s, and possibly soon to be evicted Japanese built vehicle.
