Car import permits for Tampa-Mexico ferry passengers

Can't Post |
Has anyone looked in to whether or not it will be possible to get car import permits in either Cancun or Progreso when the new ferry service starts? There is talk that the Yucatan will be like Baja where you don't need a permit unless you plan to move on to other parts of Mexico. Apparently, you'll need to drive to the Belize border post near Chetumal to get one if that's the case. If that's true, it will somewhat negate the mileage savings of taking the ferry in the first place.

No, Banjercitos, where you would get the permits are in every major Mexican city and at all ports. You will have no problem.

But the customs office in Progreso would need to have a "vehicular control module" as described in the link below...not just a Banjercito.
If you ask this question to Scotia Prince, operator of the ship, they claim to know nothing about "insurance" and to call Ace insurance for help. Pathetic.
: No, Banjercitos, where you would get the permits are in every major Mexican city and at all ports. You will have no problem.

: But the customs office in Progreso would need to have a "vehicular control module" as described in the link below...not just a Banjercito.
As you may have seen on other posts, the customs office and Banjercito are too different things. I know that at the border the Banjercito and Aduana are in the same building. This does not apply for the majority of the country. The aduana/customs office HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH VEHICLE IMPORTS. You have to go to the Banjercito. You will not have a problem. I am sure they will also set up an insurance station. As with the case the Banjercito/Aduana stations at the border along Texas, there are insurance companies propped up inside the facility to serve you.
My other thinking is that the ferry would not promote the car thing unless there would be a problem.
: If you ask this question to Scotia Prince, operator of the ship, they claim to know nothing about "insurance" and to call Ace insurance for help. Out-of-date information

The link to the Mexican Consulate in Austin contains out-of-date information.
The bond/cash amounts are grossly wrong as are a couple of other items.
As for you original question about being able to register your car upon landing: It is inconceivable that Mexico would have a port where cars could enter without a place to register them. Mexico is very uptight about the car issue, so there is no way they are going to let you drive inland with registering. The only exception is Baja and the border towns.
Don’t worry about your car.
For a little more up-to-date information that that from the Mexican Consulate web site, click below.

Hi,
I'm planning to take the ferry early Dicember and was also looking for more information on temporary import of vehicles (IITV or Modulos). I'm planning to go beyond the border of Yucatan/Quintana Roo so I want to make sure there are"Modulos" in either port. So I went to banjercito's web site to check if there were "Modulos" in either port (http://www.banjercito.com.mx/htm/contactenos_ubicacion.htm) and it seems that neither has one, however it indicates that there is one in Chetumal which is about 240 miles from Cancun. Here is the address and phone number of that office:
Av. México, s/n, Interior del Edificio de la Aduana Fronteriza, Subteniente López Chetumal, Q. Roo
C.P. 77900
Lada: 01-983
Tel: 834-50-43
Since I really want to take the ferry along with my car, I'm going to give them a call and check what the deal is with the ports of entry in question. I'll keep you posted.

Turns out there is a "modulos" in Progreso. I followed the links you provided and if you click on the Yucatan portion of the map, it lists the IITV branch in the "edificio de la aduana" building.
Thank you for your help.
