Can I get a permit to bring a car to Mexico fo 8 months?

My wife and I are planning to live in Mexico for 8 months from November to July. We were planning to drive our car. We were planning to come on a tourist visa. We were planning to leave Mexico after 4 months on a trip to Argentina by plane for 2 weeks and then return. Your website says that permits for cars in Mexico only last 6 months. Is it possible to get a permit for longer than 6 months? If not, can we apply for an extension while we are in Mexico?

Yours truly,

John Lawrence

6 months is the limit unless you have an FM3. Before the time runs out, you must go to a land border to get a new permit; it cannot be done anywhere else.

Technically, when you fly off to Argentina, your car becomes illegal. To comply with the law, you should remove your car from México before you leave for Argentina, or get an FM3 which will solve all your problems.
