Brownsville to Yucatan/gas cost/bringing gas

Can't Post |
I am planning on a fun filled trip to Isla Mujeres, Playa Del Carmen, and Palenque. Gas was about $2.30 a gallon when I made my last road trip in January. How much is it now? Also, I have a pickup truck, how much gas can I bring? Would I run into problems bringing gas?
I never take toll roads in Mexico but this time I am bringing my grandmother and want to cut down on the road time a bit.
Any advice on the price of gas, toll road prices, recommended stops, would be greatly appreciated.
Brian

Imported Gasoline is Contraband!

The list of prohibited items at the TJ Customs area starts with GASOLINE!, moves on to USED CLOTHES and gets to GUNS and AMMO after those items.
I have seen many VW vans (Vanagons mostly) hauling gas on their rooftops!! (*DUMB*) Just pay the $2.?? a gallon for Pemex and save the embarrassment of a customs confiscation!
Pernel

I never found the price of gas as bad a problem as the quality of the gas. The regular(magna) gas is absolutely horrible. I pay more for the premium, which is often imported.

We also wondered about that. With the great differece in gas prices between the US and Mexico I would think there would be a lot of that, at least near the border. It seems as though it would be a good money maker. Anyone know the laws?

I was told the price of gas was approximately $2.95 per gallon and diesel $2.00
I don't recall the source, but it was recent.

Brian,
Sounds like a great trip. You have nothing to worry about as far as gas is concerned. The longest strech without a gas station from the Texas border to Isla Mujeres (Cancun) is under 50 miles. I don't know how much gas is since I burn diesel.
Motels are all over the place with one exception. The highway between Veracruz and Villahermosa is one long highway that goes on and on for hundreds of miles. Along the road ou can find resturants, gas, rest stops, but no motels. So before leaving
Veracruz make sure you have enough time to make it to Villahermosa before dark. As far as toll prices are concerned they're expensive. Approximatley $130.00 each way.
Hope this helps,
Anthony
