Bicycle on CHEPE train

I've read so many things on different sites... You can't take a bicycle on as luggage at all, you can take it on the 2nd class train, you can if you pack it in cardboard box, you can if you arrive at the train station a day or two before leaving to make arrangements for the bike.

Is anyone sure of the policy? Is it something that if you provide a generous tip they'll get done for you? I'm planning to bicycle from Ojinaga and take the train from Chihuahua to Los Mochis and then ride down the Pacific Coast. Not sure if it will be possible to take my bike on the train as luggage. Thanks for any help you can give me!

Hi. I have done this before on the train. Maybe I am repeating myself if you've seen this already over on TT's MB forum.

Here's what I learned. Bikes are allowed, usually. We showed up the day before in Mochis to get our tix, and by chance ran into a conductor outside. He said that if space was at a premium they could refuse, but rarely do. So the next morning we showed up to take Segundo Norte, and it was 80 percent full, at least.

Still we loaded up our boxed bikes no problem in the same car as us.

Now on Primera the train was maxxed out, or was about to be right after we got on in Creel. The conductor charged us full fare each, yes each, for the bikes. Wowsers.......

Otherwise he wouldn't have charged us anything or a little bit less if they had plenty of space.
