Best route from McAllen to SMA

I'm trying to find out the fastest route between McAllen, Texas and San Miguel de Allende. I've gone the Montemorelos/Linares backroads route before but find that the trip through the mountain range is quite slow. I'm wondering whether it's faster to go to Saltillo and hit Highway 57 from there, even though it looks farther on the map. Any suggestions?
