Best driving route from Ajijic to Uruapan

We are planning a trip to Uruapan, which we have never visited, in March. What is the best driving route from Ajijic. There appears to be a cuota route on Highway 15 to San Agustin, where you can pick up another cuota past Morelia, Patzcuaro, then to Uruapan. This seems straightforward enough, but somewhat out of the way. Another route appears to be a libramiento (#37) due south from the cuota #15 at Churinitzio to Uruapan. This appears much shorter, but we don't know the condition of the road. Any thoughts on these two routes or another better way?

Also, does anyone have any suggestions for a moderately priced hotel in Uruapan? We'd like something reasonably close to El Centro with off street parking.
