Avoiding Torreon

While Torreon is just off the highway when we are headed south and returning north, we no longer consider staying the night there for the reasons Rolly stated below:

"Torreón is a mess right now. 300 police officers were fired for various criminal acts, and the force is still, effectively, out of service. The main commercial produce market has changed their opening hour to avoid opening the early morning darkness because of so many robberies. 20% of the restaurants in Torreón that used to operate at night are now closing at dark. Overall bar and restaurant business in off by 40%."

This revision in our travel routine has necessitated an extra nights hotel in Mexico in both directions but has allowed us to feel more comfortable. We don't even consider pulling off the highway there to either get something to eat or gas up the van.

I assume you know about the latest incident that occurred over the weekend. Gunmen shot up a new club on opening night killing at least 8 and wounding quite a few others. Several hours later in Lerdo/Gomez P. the decapitated bodies of four young guys were found with their heads displayed on the front hood of a pick-up with a narcomensaje implying they were the shooters at the bar.

Nice, but what if I want to watch Santos win the championship? It must be safe up there in NM.

I too think he may be overreacting, but I doubt things like this happen very often in Albuquerque.

You may just be right about me over reacting Rolly!

However, we all have our somewhat defined comfort zones and Torreon has just never felt comfortable to us. Having tried the BEST WESTERN In Gomez Palacio, both FIESTAS, BEST WESTERN EXPRESS (formerly the RAMADA EXPRESS) and the HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS in Torreon, we just were not that satisfied by the locations or the general feeling we got when staying at them. In fact, in all of our Mexico travels, which would include at least 10 round trips into or past Torreon, we have never found any other town or city where we have felt such discomfort. So for us, the best is simply to avoid it.
