A trip to the "home planet"

Just back last evening from a trip to the "home planet". I entered at Laredo #2 at about 5:30am yesterday, only one other truck there. The young lady looked briefly in my big suitcase, but not very carefully as she didn't bump into the quart of Irish whiskey given by a friend. She lifted the lid on a couple of boxes, but seemed puzzled by the trash bag full of Christmas lights, didn't even notice the sizable RC helicopter sitting on the passenger side floor. I had bought a new reciprocating saw for my gardener for Christmas, still in the original box, I told her about it and she shrugged and said I could go. However just on leaving the area an older Aduana approached the right side of the car and I rolled down the window and he asked for something, but I didn't understand and after an attempt or two he gave up and said to "jale", so I did.

As I started S toward the 20 mile check point traffic stopped dead. We sat there for an hour and 15 minutes. Traffic was coming north ok. Federales and military were going south in the north bound side. When we started to move there was no indication of what happened except at the big Aduana station at 20 miles there was no one in the little booth in the middle of the road, no one was getting a light, red or green, there were no cars in the inspection bays, in fact, I didn't see any Aduana anywhere and we were funneled by two Federales who glanced at our stickers with flashlights and sent us on our way.

So, overall on exit and entry as usual, I didn't turn in my sticker on leaving and no one checked, so on my return I saved the $300. On my northbound leg I was stopped twice at checkpoints and asked for my papers and in both cases I gave my original visa and a copy of my sticker paperwork, no problem. On the way south I was only stopped once at Matehuala by a Federale who shook hands, asked where I was going and said "have a good trip".

I also didn't bother with an FMM and no one asked about it either. So, overall it seemed the same as last year.

Lots of military going both ways, all moving, in fact in one case, I was driving 80mph and 3 pickups blew by me going well over 90 I'm sure and just a little ahead of me the last one in line blew a left front tire but managed to get off the road ok. Probably an hour or two later the other two blew back past me still heading south.

The unusual military traffic south of Nuevo Laredo was probably related to the situation referenced in this link, fighting between federal forces and cartel members around the town of Vallecillo beginning Friday that left at least 25 people dead, including apparently four police and soldiers:
