I just spoke to an insurance agent about taking my car to Mexico for a year. He told me some things I already knew about having to get insurance in Mexico, but he said that the U.S. border will be the main problem. When I bring my car back through the States (to Canada), the U.S. (and possibly the Canadian customs) will charge me heavy importing fees, as if I just bought the car in Mexico! Is this true?

If that were the case, then there would not be the long string of Canadians heading south each autumn and returning north each spring. I think this agent is very wrong. However, I'm not a Canadian and someone else can probably be much more definitive on this one.

Johnny, your agent is dead wrong. You will not have any problem driving back into the USA.

Absolute garbage. Coming back into the United States is easy. I have a friend in my building with Ontario plates (expired for several years) and they let him right on through after he shows he is Canadian.
