Reynosa to Ajijic

On the map coming in at Reynosa and taking 35 to Linares then 31 over to 57 looks like it would beat coming in through Laredo but --- I'd be interested in hearing from anyone that had tried it. Also how about going straight across 57 over to 54 --- I'm interested in feedback

That little road to Linares and then over to 57 looks so tempting on the map...it seems like the logical shortcut. But...I hear that the road is twisting, narrow, and verrrrrry slow over-the-mountains. I too would like to hear more from anybody who's done it. I've driven 54, and I'll just keep on driving the 57 instead, tyvm.

My wife and I live near Reynosa on the U.S. side and she is from Michoacan so we have made the Reynosa-Michoacan trip dozens of times. Over the years we have tried every route that is possible between those two points.
If you plan to take that route through Linares be sure you have a reliable automobile. There are long stretches that are very lonely out there. Definitely do not drive through there at night. There are also long stretches of winding roads which seem to never end. The road is narrow and you will see many slow moving trucks going through there. And once you get past that
(going from Michoacan to Reynosa) you will find that going through Linares and Montemorelos and other small towns can be very confusing because there are no road signs in many parts of that route.
Perhaps others have a different opinion but we thought that route was the least attractive to take.
Good luck.

What you posted is exactly what I've heard many times...and is exactly why I've never taken the turn-off for Linares, no matter how tempting it looks on the map. Next time I drive north, I'll just wave as usual as I pass by that little road heading up over the hills.

thank you for the information. I'll probably just keep going through the Monterrey, Saltillo area and either going 54 or 57 depending on wheather I want to stay over in Zacatecas or Matehuala.

We drove 80 - 57 -40 - 85 -2 last month from Lakeside to Laredo (Columbia) and back, using cuotas where available, and were very pleased with that route. All 4-lane divided except for part of Hwy 2 between Hwy 85 and Columbia, and about 50 miles between San Luis Potosi and Lagos de Moreno. Several miles of the road between SLP and LdeM is not very well maintained at this point, probably because they're building a 4-lane road to replace it.

I've never driven 54 but have seen numerous posts on Mexconnect referring to 54 as mostly 2-lane (with the usual hazard of getting stuck behind slow trucks), very winding in spots, and, at least awhile back, with lots of potholes. Also, several posts refer to much of 54 as having few enough towns and little enough traffic to raise concerns about safety and services.
