Hi everyone, Iam moving to Guadalupe, which is just outside of Monterey, Mexico. I would appricate any advice anyone could offer. I went down there with a friend two weeks ago and I got a permit for my car. We only stayed two days and I wasn't aware that I was to go to a bank and pay for my car. I gave the man my credit card when I got my permit and he charged me $21.00 I think. I thought that was it. I want to return next week and now I am nervous . What shall I do? Also I am looking for a Good christain church down there to do some volunteer work. Are there any Americians or Canadians in the area that we could talk to. I am planning on taking a spanish class after I get settled in. Hoping to hear from you soon. Jeannie

Based on your description, the $21 charge was the payment. It may not have looked like it but you probably had to go to a window marked 'Banjercito' or something like that. That's the 'local branch' that accepts the payments for the permits. Assuming you got the little hologram sticker, and still have it in your window, you should be all set. If that's not the case, let me know and we'll ask some more questions.

What's real important is that when you decide to leave permanently (and are taking the car back out to stay) that you also stop by aduana (customs) and their local branch bank and get the receipt showing you took the car out of the country and that they took back their sticker. Keep a copy of the receipt and your cancelled permit and keep them in the car (or some other safe place) in case you ever have to show that you cancelled your previous permit.

Good luck

What you are supposed to pay at the bank, is the fee for your Tourist Permit (FMT). It's not about your car. Also remember that with a tourist permit, in 6 months, your car won't be legal.
