Making URLs 'light up' and other goodies

When you include a URL in your message, it is nice to have it click-able. You know it's click-able if it "lights up." If it doesn't, you should be sure there is a space before and after the URL. Sometimes it takes two or even three spaces to make it work.

If you want to get fancy, you can have a word or words in a sentence reference a URL.

This is an example of a word referencing a URL. (not a real one in this example).

Here's how to do it. First type the sentence using the URL rather than the word you want to use.

This is an http://not-a-real.url of a word referencing a URL.

Then click on Switch to Basic Editor, and you will see:

This is an {url "http://not-a-real.url/"}http://not-a-real.url{/url} of a word referencing a URL.

The URL within the quote " " marks is the real URL. The second one is what will appear in the message, and that is what we will replace with the word or words that we want to light up. It is becomes:

This is an {url "http://not-a-real.url/"}example{/url} of a word referencing a URL.

Now switch back to Advanced Editor, and you will see your finished work.

This is an example of a word referencing a URL.

Note in the instructions I changed the brackets [ ] to braces { } in order to get the instructions to appear correctly. When you do it, do not change the brackets [ ].

Rolly, I have found that sometimes when I put a space or three after a URL and it still doesn’t light up, if I backspace the curser to the last character in the URL and then hit the spacebar it will then light up. Sometimes I need to do that 2 or 3 times before it works.

That action may be peculiar to MS Word, I don’t know. I type all my posts, and replies in Word so I have a decent spell and grammar checker and then copy and paste them in to the post, or reply box.

ˇHíjole, Rolly! That was one of the most difficult, hoop-jumping ways to make a live link with word subsitution I've ever done. I finally did it, after the umpteenth attempt.
Unless I'm missing something, (could be), the Thorn Tree system is much easier.
So is Blogger.com
I also found that my browser, Apple Safari, does not support Advanced Editor, so I had to switch to Firefox.

Thanks for trying to explain it to me.

I always put Enter (New Line) after URL to make it turn into a link. Then I can backspace and remove if I like.

I have found a reason some may be having trouble making a link "light up." I have found that Firefox does not work correctly when pasting links. If you are using Firefox, you may need to switch to the basic editor and use the url/url things.

Firefox works great in pasting links, in my experience--not not here!
