Living and Retiring in Mexico

Can't Post | Private Reply
Hello:

This is my first go at a forum..so we'll hope for the best.

My wife and I (50's) are seriously considering moving to Mexico in the fall.

My folks retired to Mexico in the early 70s and enjoyed twenty great years in Guadalajara.

My questions are thusly:

I have a sister who has fm2 status as she is married to a Mexican and has resided in Mexico for over thirty years. Is she our best resource as far as giving us info re what status to enter Mexico on..we want to work but also bring quite a few possession with us by car if that is at all possible without paying a large ante at the border.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated..your Canadian gringo amigos.

I would advise you to search this website. Much if not all of the questions you will have, will already have been asked and answered.

Right now the majority of the folks arriving in the village of Ajijic, seem to be not from the US not from Canada, but from GTA. They are mostly coming as snowbirds planning to stay less than 6 months.

Make sure you bring a star choice small dish system with you if you want to listen to or watch your favorite radio and TV stations. The signals come in well here. I get my Vancouver-Seattle stations

Oh here's a hint for those of you who have never heard of GTA. The 401 passes through it and has a maximum width of 16 lanes. Still confused? (Greater Toronto Area)

Don Adam's (Uncle Donnie on this forum) has an excellent book - it's new, detailed, and funny

www.headformexico.com

I also like Ken Luboff's How to Retire in Mexico as a general intro.

I have been reading forums and have gained a lot of good advice.I read that my small Direct T.V. dish would be too small in the Chapala area. Due to Chapala's location a larger dish is required. Will our small dish do the job?

Thank You for all the good info. Doris

Your 18 by 20 inch DirecTV dish points at 3 satellites located at 101 W. Satellites 1S, 2, & 4S are positioned close enough so that your very inaccurate small dish can receive signals from all of them.

However the signal is so weak in Ajijic that you need bigger dishes. Bigger dishes are more accurate. And by the time you get one big enough to pick up the signals, it is 5 to 8 feet in diameter. A dish that big and can differentiate between the the three satellites, therefore requiring 3 of these larger, expensive satellite dishes.

Such a system is not practical, therefore most folks install either Dish (Ku), Star Choice (Ku) or a 4DTV receiver (C Band) dish this far south. However the farther north you get, the smaller the dish you need. I'm told that in Mazatlan and to the North, that DirecTV works well. (Check with your local satellite dealer to determine the requirements for your area)
