First thing is simple. If you are a guest (no account or, not logged in), you can read, but not post ( - except on this Practice forum). To post, you must have a validated account and log in. Next thing: Read and Not yet Read Postings. At first, ALL the messages in every Forum will show the yellow "Not Read Yet" icon on the left - even if you have read all the old posts on the old forum - still yellow. So I suggest that you go to the Main Forum Index, scroll to the bottom, and click the link that says "Mark all Read" Now, hit the refresh or reload button. See - all the yellows are gone. From now on, ANY new messages posted will show a yellow icon. For a Thread that you have read, that now has a new reply below somewhere, the icon will be white/grey with a yellow color behind it. Third: Why didn't the colour change after I read a message and went back? Well, it did! BUT, your browser isn't showing the change yet. Why not? Because your browser is using its cache to present the page. - Which means it is giving you the page BEFORE you read the message. Ok, So what do you do? Options: 1. Don't use the "Back" button. Click on the appropriate part of the Navigation line that says: " Home: General: Practice & Help Forum: ", or Main index instead. So, you did that, and it STILL hasn't changed colour? Well now you need to do some settings changes. (But first, if you hold down the "SHIFT" key and click Refresh or Reload button, you are forcing your browser to get the most recent version of the page, with the color change in it!) Fourth: Changing settings for Cache. To make things faster for you, your Browser remembers where you have been (it saves copies of the pages). So, when you hit "Back", it pulls the saved (old) copy of the page. This is OK for static pages that don't change. However, many sites are now using Dynamically generated pages - they are created only when someone requests the page. This enables the pages to reflect the most recent version - like the Forums, or a Newspaper, or Hockey scores or . . . So. To help you avoid getting the old page all the time, your Browser allows you to change its settings. IE (Internet Explorer) Click on "TOOLS" Click on "Internet Options" Select the "General" tab Half way down that little window, there is a section called Temporary Internet Files. Inside that section there is a button called "Settings" Click on Settings If you are successful thus far, at the top of the little window will be the phrase: "Check for newer Versions of stored pages:" along with four options. The one you want to choose (by clicking in the little circle to the left of each option) is the top one "Every visit to the page" When that has been chosen (round button inside circle), click OK Click OK again. Now. Your browser will get a fresh copy every time (UNLESS you hit the back button which still gives you the cached version!) Netscape Users: Edit Prefrences click on the little arrow pointing to "Advanced" (This will open up the Advanced menu) Click on the word "Cache" Look for: Compare the page in the cache to the page on the Network: You want: "Every time I view the page" Click in the circle to the left of this choice Click OK. Now. Your browser will get a fresh copy every time (UNLESS you hit the back button which still gives you the cached version!) Enough for now!
