university teaching

hi all,

i was hoping to get some information from english teachers working at universities. For example, types of schedules, expectations of teachers, popular books used in mexico, dress code, salary ranges and other benefits.... Im looking into Guadalajara as the weather sounds good, and it has so many universities. Also, regarding finding a job, i know internet-works has a placement program.... is it worth using this program.... i have 4 years experience teaching esl and will have my masters before i go to mexico..... any advice is helpful....

gracias,

michael

Hi Michael,

I very highly recommend that you contact Internetworks. They also publish a monthly report on job opportunities in differing areas of the country. You can buy an archived set on CD to find answers to many of the questions you have. And they may even contact you personally if a position comes in that they think might be right for you. They e-mailed me once about a great sounding job in Veracruz but I didn't want to go at the time.

You'll discover that, just like everywhere else, conditions and requirements differ, but you'll be able to get a feel for many geographical locations.

The University jobs usually pay better and with your qualifications (4 years classroom experience and a Master's---in TEFL or ESL?) you should be an excellent candidate for anyone who has an opening. And some of the private high schools in more affluent areas pay quite well so don't limit yourself too much.

Go back to the home page to the author's index to find my article on teaching down here.

Good luck in your upcoming adventure!

Ive also heard good things about internet works. I just didnt know if they dealt with universities too, or if they only dealt with language schools, which im really not interested in.
