taking in small items??

Can't Post |
In moving to Mexico and not really wanting to move a household, can small items be brought in in your luggage (ie coffee pot, small cd player etc) with an FMT? Would any special papers be needed to bring in a few things in a suitcase at a time?

Yes, you can bring those things. No special papers required.

Except for the large items of furniture, I think we equipped our house entirely from stuff carried in our luggage. I remember a particularly entertaining conversation with a security guy about how I could possibly use my blender as a weapon. [Only if people ate my cooking, we decided.] They finally concluded I was a danger only to myself and let me carry it on.

Now, I've always gotten the "green light" at the airport, so I don't know exactly what would have happened upon having my bags opened. However, you are allowed a dollar amount to bring in, and my humble kitchen gadgets, used linens, etc. probably haven't added up to the limit on any given trip.

We are commuter retirees until we get rid of all our stuff [business related] in the US, so we make about 8 trips a year for varying length of time to Lakeside.

Read http://www.mexconnect.com/mex_/whatstuff.html and http://www.paisano.gob.mx You're limited to the items enumerated and your franquicia without having to pay duty. You may find yourself in a position of paying duty, although the amount ought not be very much.

Would you say that gradually by plane is the best way to get the stuff there, sans furniture? My I ask how or if you transported a car? I'm looking for the best way to go.

My personal situation may be different from yours. We purchased our home about two years ago. We won't be fully away from the US for another year. So, we make many trips (about 8 per year for varying lengths of time) back and forth. Each time I bring household "stuff" in my luggage. All my clothes are already there - I could travel with my pocketbook, if I wanted to. The rest is the "stuff" I think I need or don't want to throw/sell/give away. We go by plane, although my husband made one trip by car (with our microwave) when we took the car down there. The car is having a better time than we are.

We've made several trips by car (van) and always take a lot of stuff without any problem.

Taking a break from packing here and now I'm concerned about the amount of stuff I'm taking! A full size van filled to the brim and towing a Jetta also filled to the brim! I love to decorate and am taking a lot of decorative items, a couple of sets of dishes...well, just tons of stuff. Am I going to run into problems??! I just love my "stuff"! It's been hard enough selling all my furniture and I'm trying to sell my 4 month old desktop computer, too. :o(

Making many trips by road or air may be good for you guys... But we live in Canada and as we are not that flush with money, we could not afford the commuting..
