schools

I posted this in the Michoacan forum as well because that's the area I think we are mainly interested in but I'd like info that anyone might be aware of. I am considering a move or long trip to Mexico with my children. One of my kids is autistic and I'm interested in what schools might be available. Especially Waldorf or Montessori that handle special education. I'd appreciate links or resources that anyone can provide. Thanks.

I'm a guest this week but expect to subscribe soon. These forums seem really productive and informative compared to when I was browsing about a year ago. Great site!

Obviously, it depends on where your child falls on the autistic spectrum, but services for special education tend to be much, much spottier than in the United States. There are quite a few people who pretend to know something about autism because they studied Bettleheim while working toward their psychology degree. We have had "professionals" tell us some astoundingly stupid things -- so stupid that it is difficult to maintain my temper. The "refrigerator mother" theory, in its cruder variants, is still alive and well here. We had one moron plunge into that in detail 5 minutes after we had presented her with a copy of an MRI from one of Mexico's best neurologists and best hospitals showing structural cerebral problems. Really evil she was, if unconsciously so.

On the other hand, there are some people who do know what they are doing and the costs of therapy are relatively low compared to the United States, though still expensive.

There are a handful of specialized schools-clinics around Mexico that specialize in autism and related disorders. I know of two in Mexico City (we have used both) -- CLIMA and Domus. Both do some work on integration-mainstreaming (shadow teachers, etc) though more is done at Domus. CLIMA may be somewhat more advanced in terms of modern theory.

If you want more advice, you can send me a private message.

I don't know if there is anything in Morelia.

I didn't reply on the Michoacan forum, because I don't have all the answers to your question. While those who live in Morelia make do with what's available, I don't think I'd make a pilgrimage to Morelia for its educational programs for autistic children. John Rice has a better perspective on the special education landscape than do I.

I have two friends in Morelia who have severely brain-damaged children who would've been institutionalized from birth in another era. One child is essentially warehoused during the school day, and the other attended a regular school with his attendant. Both come from educated families who would provide their children with the best available, if only it were available.

I sent you a private message.

After doing so, I came across this more complete directory of autism resources:

cheers.
