Obviously, it depends on where your child falls on the autistic spectrum, but services for special education tend to be much, much spottier than in the United States. There are quite a few people who pretend to know something about autism because they studied Bettleheim while working toward their psychology degree. We have had "professionals" tell us some astoundingly stupid things -- so stupid that it is difficult to maintain my temper. The "refrigerator mother" theory, in its cruder variants, is still alive and well here. We had one moron plunge into that in detail 5 minutes after we had presented her with a copy of an MRI from one of Mexico's best neurologists and best hospitals showing structural cerebral problems. Really evil she was, if unconsciously so. On the other hand, there are some people who do know what they are doing and the costs of therapy are relatively low compared to the United States, though still expensive. There are a handful of specialized schools-clinics around Mexico that specialize in autism and related disorders. I know of two in Mexico City (we have used both) -- CLIMA and Domus. Both do some work on integration-mainstreaming (shadow teachers, etc) though more is done at Domus. CLIMA may be somewhat more advanced in terms of modern theory. If you want more advice, you can send me a private message. I don't know if there is anything in Morelia.
