renewing FM3

My FM3 was supposed to be renewed June 4 2008. i heard i could renew within 6 months of that date, and just pay a fine and fill out a few more papers. does anyone know exactly what is currently required for a normal renewal and a late one? i am returning to mexico on nov4 and now am freaking a bit that they might take away the fm3 entirely and make me leave or something. not good as i plan to be there for 3 months. help please.

I would suggest that you just get a tourist visa since you only need it for 3 months and leave the FM 3 until you have more time down here. When and if you decide to renew your FM3 at a later time, you will have to pay a fee (don't know how much), but you might want to contact my friend Beatriz de la Garza to help you with the renewal. You can see her web site at www.retiringinmex.com. She does this routinely so she knows all about it. Good luck.

I second Norma's motion.

Beatriz de la Garza is as competent, honest and genuinely caring a person as you'll ever find. She goes the second mile to help her clients.

Do this ASAP. There are implications for having an extra stamp in your passport and not on your FM3, but I also think handing them the FM3 equals surrenderit in your case. The only experience I have is knowledge from a friend a couple years ago who thought it wise to leave without having his FM3 stamped and returned to renew it after it had expired. Mucho multa!

Curious as to what turned out for you. Please tell us.
My FM3 expired while one university held on to it claiming they were renewing everything for me...I paid the fees too. The university never paid me for months of teaching so I asked for my paper work back and quit. NOTHING was filed for me for 3 months I then learned. I promptly took my papers to an immigration office to fix it all (with receipts of fees paid and copies of EVERYTHING) and guess what? They tore it up and demanded that I start the process all over and pay another fine PLUS this agent wanted to see my husband's last 3 months of bank accounts because of this visa being expired. I told him hubby didn't have one in Mexico, but I did...and he asked to see his from USA. I got out of there fast. The agent kindly informed me I had no right to be there, working or living and that I should leave. yeah, yeah...I don't scare easily but I did end up coming back home cause that was one time I did get worried. He had my address! I was there alone with two little girls (hubby had to go back to Atlanta at that time). I was sick that all my efforts to get my visas in order for two years straight were thrown out the window. I was trying for residency as a spouse to a Mexican (I could do it on the 3rd year with an FM3 whereas most I believe need 5 years and others restrictions apply). Jerk.

But oh well. I will go back someday (needed a break for now).

side note: Ladies, be prepared to ask for some help from time to time. Taking care of business in Mexico isn't the same as taking care of it on your own in USA. I really should have asked a man or my strong Mexican mother-in-law to go with me.
