The best advice is to seek help from a lawyer who is competent in Mexican real estate law. The fee that you pay him will be small in comparison to the potential headaches that you may have later. Another idea, besides purchasing a property, is renting one. That would give you a good chance to see if you like an area before committing to live there. In the U.S., we Americans always feel compelled to buy property. I know of a few people who visit Mexico for extended periods of time, however, who always find a decent rental property for their stay.
