internet in B.F.E.?

Buenos dias!

Does anyone know about how to set up internet in remote Mexican places? I am going to be in a rural Oaxacan community where there is no internet yet. However, there are phone and power lines.

Thanks!

Karla

If there is a phone, you can have access to the internet although it may be a toll call to the nearest ISP. Talk to the phone company; they can help you sign up and tell you what the toll cost will be.

Should you be an internet fanatic like me and and need to be on line for long periods of time, there is also two way satellite internet connectivity, but you are talking big bucks here and you probably are simply looking for a way to check your email and to do an occasional web search.

Sadly long distance aint cheap in Mexico and also telephone line quality can negatively impact your connection speeds. Let the tech forum know what you decide to do so that we can benefit from your experiences.

If you are interested in two way satellite connections were the equipment costs many hundreds of dollars and the monthly fee is at least $70, come on back and I can give you the appropriate URLs

When we came to Ajijic there was no ISP so we signed up with AOL in GDL. A call cost about 35 cents a minute so we would have our messages typed and ready to go, go on line, download incoming and send outgoing. It only took a couple minutes. Not too bad

I arrived in Ajijic in late summer of 1997 to take possession of my newly purchased home and signed up for internet service. I didn't know that Lagunanet, the first Internet Service provider lakeside, only started up a few months earlier. Our own MexConnect webhefe David was often at the office. I now help out at Lagunanet and he still occasionally comes in.

In those days I still hooked up via a telephone modem. I soon learned that one needed to have a high quality modem to ensure a solid connection. Just because one has a new computer does not mean that s/he has a modem meant for 3rd world telephone connections.

So make sure that you have a good modem, especially if you are going to be out in the sticks, where the chances are great that your connection will be "third World". Good luck,

Pete

Further to using a good modem: i have found that a hardware modem works better on marginal lines. My favorite is a 3com/USRobotics. Those 10 buck babies are not suitable.
