homesickness

No not us yet. We just got here. But I wonder how some people deal with it when stricken. Spoke with a woman recently who after 9 years of living here and liking it, is thinking about moving back to Illinois to be closer to family. She said her husband may not be on the same page. Ouch!

Love to hear how some others cope with being homesick.

How do you become homesick when you’re already home? For many of us, Mexico is home. We moved here, lock, stock and barrel, and became permanent residents. Mexico is where we build our lives, invest our hearts and souls, and day by day become more and more integrated into its culture.

Life here isn’t a junior year abroad, nor is it a matter of testing the waters. It’s not a matter of “rent a while, and then move on.” We may go abroad on holiday or business, but our lives and our ties are here.

Spending a winter in upstate New York would be the cure.

Hello Ian -

I was a bit concerned about that as well.

I have only been here a short while, but plan to be here for at least 3 years until my Mexican boyfriend and I try another country (not US or Mexico). So I can understand the issues of a recent transplant. Here are some things that have helped me:

Having already great friends down here that I have known for 7+ years.

My sister sends me ingredients that I can't get here - Thai galanga root, Lemongrass, etc....(I am a caterer!)

The geo-political situation right now. Personally, I am happy to be away from the Sears Tower in Chicago!

My co-workers and fellow students remind me that it is so worth it to be here.

I have a short-wave radio that I listen to if I really need to hear some English.

Frequent flier miles to see my friends and family when I really need a break

and the easiest way - we have an extra bedroom and I have no shortage of visitors!

Good Luck, and Welcome!

Juliet
