could be tough to CLOSE a bank account

if you lose the paper that the bank gives you when you open it. We no longer can bank at Bancomer as the closing of the account was disallowed for lack of that document. If we put any money into the account it will get zapped for the monthly charges that continue to accrue. We were able to close our Bital dollar account, as we had the document. Its interesting that the identification that is sufficient to open the account is not good enough to close it !

I have experience with these two banks only, your mileage may vary.

I just walked away from Banamex after banging my head against the wall for way too long. I now use Lloyd just to show in-country income and use my debit card and my U.S. bank for paying bills. It's easier that having to think!

I was under the impression that Lloyd's didn't offer a debit card yet. Were you speaking of a personal debit card (from state-side bank) or one of Lloyd's? Thanks.

Mea culpa! I wasn't very clear was I?

As far as I know Lloyd doesn't offer debit cards. I have my check auto desposited into a Texas bank and use debit cards from there to obtain funds. Hint: Ask for several before you leave home. My bank issued two cards with the MC logo and differing numbers and PINs, plus one card with their bank ID on it. That way I have three distinct and seperate cards to use for daily withdrawals. That means that theoretically (and actually) I can draw three times the daily withdrawal limit by using all three cards.

I use Lloyd more as a small savings account to prove my income is coming into Mexico so Migracion will okay my FM-3 renewal each year. That money just sits there.

Sorry for the confusion.

I've never had a problem closing a bank account at a Mexican bank or financial house. And I've never shown them the contract signed to open the account either. But since the last time I'd closed an account was back around '95, I thought I'd defer on responding.

Just this morning, I closed my Banorte account (only because they closed the branch nearest my house), simply by showing them a bank statement, handing over my ATM card, and presenting photo I.D. The bank cranked out a letter for my signature requesting the termination of the account, in which I agreed to be responsible if there were any outstanding transactions, and they handed over copies of all documents and the remaining cash in my account ..... all in less than 60 seconds.

Of course not! I have no idea where that is, and if I had any problems, I would've simply asked to speak with the bank manager.
