computer transit

We are moving to Oaxaca this summer and expect to stay for at least two years. I have heard that you can't bring a used PC into the country. Is this true? Anyway around it? Can DHL deliver it?

With an FM3 and menaje de casa, you'll have no problem. Otherwise, I would not try to bring an old computer into Mexico. If you are planning to stay for a couple of years, a menaje would allow you to bring your househole things, or a big TV, stereo, etc, duty free. Otherwise your options are to bring a laptop -- they are duty-free, or you can bring a brand new desktop and pay a 25% duty.

You can buy a new one when you get here. If your hard drive contains valuable stuff that you can't back up to a CD, remove the drive and bring it to install in your new box. That's legal. The only forbidden thing is the computer. Drives, CD players and burners, printers, scanners, etc are all allowed -- with a duty payment unless you have a menaje.

Quoting directly from the Aduana's own website: http://www.aduanas.sat.gob.mx/aga.asp?Q=frame3

En el caso de un equipo de cómputo nuevo, podrás traerlo siempre y cuando su valor, sumado al de las demás mercancías no exceda de 4 mil dólares de los Estados Unidos de América o su equivalente en otras monedas extranjeras.

For the readers who don't speak Spanish it says:

In the case of new computer equipment, you can bring it when and if it's value, added to your other goods, doesn't exceed $4000 USD or it's equivalent in other currencies.

The duty will be 25% of the cost of the computer.

About used computers

Can I import a used computer?

No, unless the passenger can prove that the reason for their residency abroad was for study or scientific research for a period of at least 6 months and can show their visa or immigration permit issued by the country where the studies or research took place.....

I hope this helps. Have a good move.

Rolly, thanks a ton for the info. One thing I forgot to mention, I have dual nationality. Any clue how that help/hinders the move? My girlfriend is going with me but she'll be travelling under a FMT. Thanks again.

Dual Nationality and the Menaje de Casa

The procedure for a returning Mexican national who wishes to obtain the menaje de casa (household goods visa) is the same, but the cost is somewhat less. You'll still need to apply for the menaje de casa at your local Mexican Consulate.
