It's best not to drive your car until you take it out of Mexico. The car can be permanently confiscated as an illegal vehicle. Furhter, major Mexican insurance companies can refuse to cover accidents if permanent residents drive their illegal foreign-plated TIP cars. Since Feb. 2013, the accidental death payments were raised to $5 million pesos per person in many states, so having insurance protection denied at the time of an accident can be costly, and can leave the driver in jail until they prove they can pay for any and all damages. Note that the insurance agents are basically salespeople, and do not know the fine print of their policies as they continue to collect the payments, while the insurance adjustors work hard to find reasons to legitimately deny accident claims. There has already been one instance reported here on Mexconnect of the agent telling the customers that they are covered, ignoring the written clauses of the companies' policies that definitely say "no". The agreement/contract you signed with Aduana says you agreed to take the vehicle out of Mexico when you cancelled your temporary INM residency. The Ley Aduanera says you can legally drive the vehicle out of Mexico with a 5 day Retorno Seguro permit from SAT. If it is a NAFTA vehicle and is more than 5 years old, you can permanently import it at the US-Mexico border. Happy Trails, steve - Read-on MacDuff E-visit at http://yucalandia.com
